Promises of Spring

Hi All,
With help from Les, and Eddiez I've been trying to come up with a song that pays tribute to spring. I originally thought it would be a bit slow and almost melanchly but it didn't turn out that way. It's got a bit if samba feel, and I've made the lyrics more upbeat.
Anyway, I'm not much of a singer but I hope you like it.

thanks,
Doug

Promises of Spring

Geese are calling from across the bay
ancient choir thru the mist
ice is melting and the snow has gone away
Winter's dying from Spring's kiss

in the east, feel the sun behind the clouds
trying to burn away the gray
hear the birds, they're singing strong and loud
worshipping the day

April showers, yeah the rain came down
washing down on everything
April showers, what a joyous sound
the promises of Spring

look to the east, see the sun come thru the clouds
and your soul begins to sing
like a young woman lifting off the shroud
revealing promises of Spring

April showers, yeah the rain came down
washing down on everything
April showers, what a joyous sound
the promises of Spring

Doug,
Nice job on the tune. I think you need to bring the vocals up a bit though. Your singing is fine.
If you want it to come out more melancholy you can keep the same words but change the breaks in the lyrics.
Try it a few different ways.

Doug,

I was trying to point out exactly the same point as you mentioned in LC's tune. When picking out the type of tune you would like to play you than have to see who the lyric breaks change.
A prime example of this would be how the lyrics in Eveybody cries were written, and how I selected the breaks in the lyrics. That one tune alone could have been arranged in a number of styles.
Think about it.

Definitely get the feel of spring in the air, well played and sung Doug, recording wise I think you should bring your voice forward a little.

thanks everyone.
Eddie - I'm still working it this way and that, although I like the upbeat rhythm better than the slower version.
As for the recording - I was pretty rushed - my wife had just run an errand in town so didn't have much time. The other side of the joys of spring is the yard work - it's hard to justify time behind a mic .

Doug,
You did a fine job on the version. I know you expressed the desire for a more melodic version. You'll find it I'm sure.
I think I know what you were looking for.
As far as the rest of life, welcome to the club yard work.

Don't put your voice down...you did a good job! I think the coming of spring should be upbeat, not melancholy...it's a time of renewal and rebirth. Thanks for the post!

I liked it- I think it is definitely worth a re-work when you have more time. Strings would fit in here beautifully- give it that extra little bit of oomph (listen to Gordon Lightfoot's "Beautiful" for an excellent example).
