Go ahead and Cry - Original from Blind Snoopy

Here is the current version of the first original song I have written. I got it recorded Live on a cheap cassette deck while jamming with some friends. You can here the phone ringing in the background at about 4:30 something...

Cry Live (Hi Fi for those with cable or hi speed access)

Cry Live (Lo Fi for our dialup friends)

The guitar playing is getting better and the singing was OK but the levels caused some clipping I guess. I really have to get this down myself one of these days. I seem to have more fun when I am playing with other people though, maybe I just have to make some friends that have better recording equipement!

Hope you guys had a nice weekend...

Thanks Jomi, yes, Ivy is really fine. She is just the one that seems to cry over stuff. The other kids each have their own ways of expressing emotion but she is the one that does the crying. It's cool that we all have our own way of showing folks what we want and what we feel, expressing our emotions. For the other kids it's generally more aggressive but for Ivy it's tears. Drives Mom and Gramma crazy, they cannot stand tears, makes them sad too. I don't really mind at all, I just see it as her telling me she needs some attention and love. A Grampa hug is usually enough to do the trick and make it all better. hopefully it will always be that way.

In any case it's the first song that I wrote myself, I have been playing for about months now and my guitar teacher is working through some songwriting stuff with me. This was the first chance I have had to play it for anybody but family. I was over at a friend's house jamming a bit Sunday afternoon with 3 other guys, all Grampas too, and decided to try it out on them. It was fun but far from perfect. The little Tascam Cassette recorder wasn;t really all that bad but the actual tape we used was probably 20 years old. It had a Karaoke song from one of the guy's first wife on it and he has been divorced from her for at least 15 years.

I haven't been around much lately, been practicing more and surfing the web less, but wanted to share something after enjoying a great lesson or two on here.

Thanks for listening

John,

Nice tune. Your locals are a bit loud on my end.

Thanks Eddiez, the production wasn't ideal in any way actually. I will try to get a decent take of this and replace it sometime this week with something easier to listen to. Still might not be all that good but at least I can get the levels right if I do it at home. This was a live take using the monitor output from my buddie's PA mixer while the speakers were playing off the mains. It really didn't work as well i had hoped but better than I thought.

I am pretty much still a beginner at all of this so hopefully I will get it better as time goes on. Thanks for listening, you too D-Dawn...

Cool song Snoop. I thought you posted a while back that you bought a fairly high end digital recording system.

Yep Fly! I sure did, but I was at someone else's house playing with three other guys. One of my friends got a new PA and were hanging out having some fun with it. I hadn't played this live for anybody really except Ivy and the Family since I wrote it a month ago. I did have a recording of it I did the weekend I wrote it that was a bit clearer but I have been working on the guitar part, changed some lyrics based on some suggestions from the folks at Soundclick and generally learning it. We had been playing for an hour or so and I decided to do it for them. They liked it a lot so somebody dug out this Tascam Cassette deck and hooked it to the board, another guy found the old cassette from his ex-wife and I was on the spot with an audience doing a live take.

It was a blast to do and I really am glad that I got to share something live. It's different for me to do stuff in front of people, especially a group of guys that have been playing 30 years longer than I have, one professionally, and I thought it was worth sharing the moment.

I listen to the stuff on the recording forum here a lot and try a lot of the lessons, I don;t post as much as I used to, way too busy with grandkids lately and they pretty much keep the computer tied up for a lot of my free time. I just thought it would be cool to share a live take with all the warts and bumps and poor production. I really am planning on getting this onto my Korg D1600 sometime in the near future. I have sort of figured it out but it's a complicated machine and I don;t really have it figured out. I have tried it on my Toneport but that has so little headroom I can't get much dynamic range in the singing and I really haven't figured out how to do any of the effects and so on. This recording was straight out of the PA monitor channel into the tascam and it really sounds better than the best I can do with my stuff right now.

So, I am now inspired to get the books out and try to figure out the Korg. Maybe this weekend I can take a bit of time and get this thing redone and repost it for you guys. Thanks for listening to the raw version though for now...
