My take on 'It's about Time'

This is an acoustic version of the very neat track jhoita loaded up. It's more jazz than blues I reckon, and the minor 9th chords allow for all kinds of chord tone exploration if you're into that approach. There are a couple of interesting passing chords that need attention, one of the main reasons I gave up on scales long ago. Chords are, to me, a far easier way to negotiate these seemingly tricky passages ... I would have no idea how to approach this thinking scales.

This is 5:30 minutes long ... longer than anyone would be expected to solo ... it was a fun exploration, though. I played around with it for a long time before settling on this take.

Thanks for BT, John. it's a great one to play along to. It can remain a straight forward pentatonic exercise (apart from those three or four passages) or become a rich chordtone environment to play around in.

Sweet playing BTW.

I loaded the BT up in the original post, allthumbs.

The chords are really just

|Am9| - | - | - | Dm9| - |Am9| - | Em7| Dm9 | Am9 | - |... a standard 12 bar minor blues, but the keyboard is constantly altering those basic chords with extensions.

A few times, the Am9 to Dm9 change is linked with some passing chords. There's a simple version which I treated as an Aaug sandwiched between the Am9 and Dm9; the more complicated one I treated as A5- to A to Aaug to A7 then to the Dm9. I'm sure a jazz expert will have better names for them ... it's all coming from the keyboard, but you really do either have to lay out completely or play the changes with him ... or at least to my ear.

Hi Kirk

ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!!

I love how you approached the BT.

CHORD TONES .... CHORD TONES !!! What a difference Chord Tones make.

I downloaded your version and play it back to back with my own.

I'm learning a lot by listening to our two versions.

Thanks so much.

I'm going to dig out some more BTs and lets do this again.

Thanks for making other arrangements for the PT book.
I'll let you know when it arrives.

Like I mentioned to you earlier, since I have been taking in the anatomy of a C chord diargrams ... I have learnt so quickly the notes on the guitar, I am amazed.
Can't wait to dive right into your book - PlaneTalk. Looking forward to your DVD also.

Thanks

John Hoita

Wonderful Kirk. I've said it before I know, but what you can do with a plain acoustic guitar and no electronic effects is an inspiration for us all. That's what I call making music!

Kirk, that was just excellent! Any chance of a slide take in the future?

Cliff, thanks and will have a go at this on electric slide. That was my original plan anyway.

That's definitely a sweet one, Kirk - very smooth and relaxing to listen to. I hope some of your mojo leaked out of my speakers and onto my guitars!
