  A little something I made, version 2

Hi again. You all said such nice things about my first version, so I continued tinkering with it. I´m still not sure where I´m going with it, but I´m learning alot from doing it, and it´s also great fun.

Well, here´s version 2 of it.

Hope you like it, and if you don´t please say so, ´cause I´m not sure I do

Hey ink, there are a lot of beginners here that would love to be able to do this. You have a good sound and keep the beat spot on, so what's not to like? Even if this isn't the kind of stuff I normally listen to, I like it a lot better when it comes from someone who posts here on the forum.

Good job!!! Maybe you could explain your technique or tab out a bit, or even just list the chords you're using and maybe we could try playing along with it.

Ok, I´ve never tabbed anything in my life, so this is a first. I tabbed the main riff, which is what this tune started with. (I can´t seem to get the rythm the way it should be, so you will have to do that yourself)

In my youth i loved Deep Purple, and I still love the way Richie Blackmore play, and some of the more memorable riffs (smoke on the water anyone?) So, I´ve been exploring the "Richie Blackmore riffspace", so to speak, to see if I can find my own things in there.

The main riff is really just the following chords: E5, F#5, A5 and B5. These are the very chords of for example "space trucking" (if I move them to F#minor), or (very nearly) "man on the silver mountain" or, "smoke on the water" (F#5, A5, B5 etc.). I´m really fascinated with how simple these combinations of chords are, and how cool they still are.

I also did a quick recording of these three, to demonstrate it.

Thanks Ink, this will give me something to play with. I'll try and play it along with your recording. One thing that amazes me is how you can keep the strings muted and play it so clean. Whenever I crank up the gain/distortion I find it hard to keep the guitar from making noises when it's not supposed to.

Great playing and recording Ink!

The sound was really vivid - I wonder if that is because you're using .WMA instead of .MP3... It seemed to take a long time to load, but was well worth the wait!

Super job!

I still think muting is one of the most difficult things. But I haven´t really been practicing on muting. Instead it seems as if some things just happen on their own. Same thing with speed. I´ve never been interested in speed, even though some speed is necessary to be able to have a little more life in your playing. So I haven´t been practicing speed at all. But when I compare my speed now with how it was when I started (in april last year), I´ve become a lot faster. The tempo of this song is 140, and that´s because I couldn´t play any faster for a long while. I actually tested a couple of days ago and was, to my great surprise, able to play the main riff at a tempo of 200. I could never have done that even 6 months ago. So some things seems to come almost automatically, just by playing.

Jim
Well, I´m using sonar to record, and it has a good exporter for wma, and it seems to me that I get better quality than mp3, but that might just be that I´m always using a higher bitrate than what seems to be the norm. I mean, I´m spending quite a lot of time on the sound that I want for a certain song, and then to ruin it by compressing it to much is not something I want to do.

Thanks for all the kind words. I´ll probably be experimenting with it a bit more, it still doesn´t feel finished. But, I´m going to London for a week tomorrow, so I´ll let it rest for a bit and see what happens.

Bye for now,

Ingvar Hulterstrom
