chorus to Living next door to Alice
Hi I have inspired today by listening to RB and Jim to actually try to play a song , well I don't know too many songs from start to end .
So this is the chorus to one of my favourite songs , yes I know the original artist
( Smokey ) would probably come hunting me if they ever heard it ..
It's Living next door to Alice ...( no vocals ) as I wouldn't put anyone through that ..
Can someone let me know if this song is a good starting point or should I try country music first like ( Kiss an Angel Goodmorning -Charlie Pride ) or something like that ?
I just thought if I knew the song it might help me with rhythm , am I close with that statement ?
Enough of ramblings please be critical tell me where I am going wrong as I really appreciate all feed back , good or bad I don't care I'm a big boy I can handle bad reviews ..
Cheers
Trev

You held the rhythm well for the tune. It sounds very basic, like one track taken out of a mix of other instruments and vocals. I am not familiar with the song so can't comment to much on the accuracy or whether you got it down. Sounds like a solid basic rhythm part to me. Add some lead and vocals over that and your cooking.

Yes Hilch - good one!
As AT said the rhythm is steady and you held the same pattern throughout and the chords were clear and I think it's great as the rhythm track to the song (which I don't know either - but I'd like to!).
Keep working on this song - and see you if can add more tracks to it and get it to be the whole song. That's a great goal, and one I believe you can do!

Hiya Trev
Sounds pretty good to me..........I do know the song and although it doesn't sound quite exactly as I know it I'd say it comes pretty close so good on ya mate....
Unfortunately, the lyrics I know for this song (from my youth...........and adapted courtesy of Roy "Chubby" Brown) wouldn't be appropriate for this forum

Hey Trev...!!!
I think you have a great handle on changing chords... You are doing it smoothly and
cleanly... This is probably the 1st major step towards becoming a proficient guitarist...!!!
Rhythm is the heartbeat of a song... Some are very complex, and some are very simple...
Songs can be effective either way... A complex 11/8 beat or a simple 4/4, it all depends
on the groove you are trying to establish with your song...
Try to find and imitate the rhythm of the songs you usually listen to... Listen for the
repeating patterns, and tap along, noting to see if the patterns change at any point...
they usually do... Specially in the intro, bridge, chorus or outro, the verses usually stay
the same... But listening and analyzing a song in this fashion, will help to give you a handle
on how the rhythmic structure of a song is made up...
Remember... you can have rhythm without chords, and chords without rhythm... But when
you put both together, you have a song...!!!
Cheers, and well done...!!!

Your rhythm is getting pretty good, as are your chord changes. This chord progression could be anyone of a thousand songs, just by adding the appropriate melody and/or words. I don't know the song "Living Nextdoor to Alice".

This song has been banned by a number of clubs and pubs I play in around Sydney because of the refrain added to the 90's dance version...
And apart from that useless piece of trivia, this is a great foundation for the chorus. If you can keep that going for 3-4 minutes you are doing much better than a lot of other players. Being able to lay down a rhythm track like this without losing the pulse is a great thing to develop.
Well done

Well good thing you didn't sing it then Hilch, this is an all-ages friendly forum! It would be a shame if Clancy had to ban you!
Sounded like some good, rhythmic strumming to me. As for where to start... I don't know... My only advice would be to pick a song you really, really like and want to stick with for a while. Because you'll get sick of it soon enough playing it over, and over, and over again.

Oh no it is the same song, apart from the refrain added after the line
Now, I've got to get used to not living next door to Alice
It always used to amuse me when I received a job sheet from a certain club I used to play at about once a month for 5 years or so, and this and two other songs by Australian bands were on the banned list. The amusing part was that I played instrumental music there, and was not even taking a mic. It was a four hour gig and I would play two sets of solo acoustic pieces and then two sets of tunes with backing tracks, but it was music ranging from Tommy Emmanuel to George Benson to Joe Satriani, so I would never have been tempted to perform such a ribald ditty as 'Living next door to Alice'

..... followed by crude response from drunken audience.
Wasn't that a Kevin B. Wilson thing? Popular in Australia but probably (thankfully?) little known elsewhere .....
P.S. Good job on the strumming Hilch

It wasn't the work of Mr Wilson, I actually thought it was an American group?

I think it's been covered by a couple of groups..........the one I know is Smokie & Roy Chubby Brown but I believe Alice in Chains covered it too..!!
