Free Improvisation
Does anyone here get into free-improvisation? I mean, everyone does it, spontaneous jams breaking out between songs at rehearsal or at a jam session with friends. Someone starts a groove or chord vamp and everyone just falls in. There’s no chart or discussion - everybody just jumps in, feels it the best they can and jam until it trainwrecks.
I hook up with two of my best friends (the bassist 10yrs and the drummer 25yrs) every few weeks just to jam. We call ourselves The Clods and we always record the jams in case we hit something special we can tweak into actual music. It’s very Lo-Fi, just a pair of condensers 15 feet in front of us about 6 feet apart. Anyway, here are a few improvisational bits from our last jam. Warts and all – ouch! Lot’s of warts. We got lost a bunch but, some of it the ‘saves’ were funny. I’m not sure why I kept going for the wah – just feeling wah-y that day I guess.
ImprovJam_1 – I kinda dig the retro vibe in the mid-section. Not sure what was happening at the end of this one.
ImprovJam_2 – This one starts with a surf vibe (for about 10 seconds) then gets Zep’y for a bit before it trainwrecks.
ImprovJam_3 – Psychedelic country music from another planet. The piece ends mid-bar – I think the pizza man showed up.
ImprovJam_4 – I’m not sure what this is. Interesting 70’s cliché in the mid-section and a 4 second pause at 2:37 before a recovery (lost again!).
ImprovJam_5 – Wah-wah fun! Funny tune, too bad the ending got ugly.
All together now!

Very cool stuff!!! Welcome!
I love jamming - and I really like your wah style playing - I did some wah-clapton crossroads pedal blues myself this weekend and it's a sound that's been near and dear to my heart since it first became popular in the 60's. I posted my blues leads on this forum Saturday - if you look WAY down at the bottom of the page they may still be there....
Great playing - you sound like you all had a blast playing!

My god, just got through three of them and they sound great.....just one question where is the ugly that you described??????????
Can you let me / us into a trade secret are you following scales or plane talk or just going with the flow with your experience?
Just to add you have two great jam buddies!

Thanks Jim. We always have a blast.
Hey krissovo, there's plenty of ugly in there but these are just for fun. No trade secret, just jamming with the flow man. We're so used to playing together we just react and listen to each other pretty well - sometimes.
John (drums) and Len (bass) are fun to play with. They allow me to go in any direction I want. We've done some wicked fusion tunes and those guys never miss beat.

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule
Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
