  Cavatina - Deer Hunter.

Another unfinished from me it just generally repeats after the recorded section.

I played both parts, over dubbed the second guitar. It is a nice tune tho and thought it might get someone else into playing it.

Dear Fong,

Good on you for having a go at it ! - Let's all not forget this important fact with regard to reciting great compositions by brilliant composers. - Eh-Hum !! - If a musician can't get 50% close to what the composer intended...then best left alone. - This is my own personal law..it's been with me since I started playing. - I spent six weeks working on ' Cavatina ' many years ago...it never left my own ears. - However, despite getting it under my fingers...never dreamt of playing it to the public...it's such a difficult piece to make work. - Why ? - One really need a cello to make it sing...as in the origonal recording. - And, most importantly...a heart of gold.

Would we all agree that some compositions are sacred ?

All the best Fong...keep up the practise...like the rest of us !

Best wishes

Burp

Well I think its fair to say I am no Rockerbob, there is someone who can play to a professional level in my opinion.

However, this is Guitar for Beginners, it isn't a site called Guitar for only the very Accomplished almost Professional, for if it was, I wouldn't post, since i don't consider myself that sort of player.

I don't think anything should be considered sacrosanct.

I see it more, if I can post up a rendition, then it might get someone else interested in the tune, cause lets face it, if I can do a passable rendition, then so can anyone.

I know my playing isn't that great, I envy Rockerbob greatly for the sound he is able to create, but I don't see the point of hiding in a corner because of it. I am currently attempting the Sailor's Hornpipe that rockerbob posted, I doubt i will get anywhere near the quality he played, but he got me interested in the tune.

My intent here hasn't changed, I will be posting up some other tunes that I don't really do justice either, if only to see if anyone else is interested in playing them.

That sounds very nice to my beginner ears Fong. Think I'll have a look for a suitable (as in easy) tab to have a shot at.

Fong, I've also posted a version of this which was far from perfect, but I'm glad I did as I received some good feedback from it. Hopefully you'll receive some benefit from your post too. The backing track was good but I think the timing of some of the notes from the lead was sometimes a bit off and clashed with the backing track. Apart from that though it was pretty accurate, you've pretty much got it down.

I'm glad no-one told Jimi Hendrix that his version of 'All along the Watchtower' didn't match up to Bob Dylan's version. For me it's so much better.

Is the music available? I would like to learn this song. Possibly Kirk could provide a lesson for this song.

I only ever found one 'double' version, ie the Backing track and lead track seperated.

There are a lot of versions that combine the two into a single peice to play by one guitarist, but I always found it rather difficult to play and a bit unwieldy.

The only split version I have seen was in a guitar mag.

So, typically, this piece is a double? One part doing the appreggio and the other solo part?

To my untrained eye, this looks as though it contains elements of both parts.
Sorry if I'm wrong.

Aye that is the type of tab I was talking about being widely available.

It is quite different from the version I played, because it has been changed a lot to accomodate a single player playing both rhythm and lead in one go.

If you were to seperate and play both parts seperately, it would sound pretty similar, but would be clearly different, mainly due to where on the Fret Board the notes are played.

Same notes, just different place.

Also at the end of that particular tab it has this message.

according to posts on the newsgroup rec.music.classical.guitar John Williams did a double-take recording.

I think that means he did over dubs, tho to be honest, I don't really know, as I say the version I found in a mag was the only version I ever found that had the two parts seperate.

Hey Fong,
Nice job. I say, play away, record, post, revise, keep at it! Everyone has a right to their views, but with respect, I can't understand that there would be songs that are so sacred you don't dare play them and share them.

Thanks gave me the confidence to post my butchered version of Classical Gas too
