Crazy on You: Heart
Hey folks,
I played this tune at a friend's place last night with two acoustics strumming in unison. It sounded pretty good, so I recorded a so-so version today on my 12 string. (I did the signature hook intro on my strat.) It's a great strumming tune. (Hilch you should take a crack at it) Nancy Wilson can play a mean guitar and you can see her great acoustic intro to this tune on youtube. Enjoy -- or don't!

Nancy does know how to rock! And you didn't do too bad yourself there, Todd.
That is a real good tune to work out strumming.

Way to go, Todd. That's definitely a good strummin' song.

Thanks guys,
To really get that strumming sound down pat for this tune I think I'd need to oil up my wrist to get it really loose!

Todd--
Excellent! You've got the sound down from this tune. One of my favorites for sure. I like how you play the 'push' when the F and G chords come in the verses. That's a definite part of the signature of this rhythm riff.
Please forgive me in advance if you take this as criticism; I only mean it as constructive help!
In order to get the strumming pattern nailed down for this song, start thinking about strumming using a 16th note rhythm. Just make it easy and stay on the first chord to get the pattern down. Take it slow and build up to tempo.
Am
1-e-and-a-2-e-and-a-3-e-and-a-4-e-and-a
It's basically a constant up-and-down strumming type of pattern.
Notice where the emphases on the strums are (to begin with, just to get the hang of that, stick with the down beats):
1-e-and-a-2-e-and-a-3-e-and-a-4-e-and-a
So next try it with the pattern of the chorus.
Am..................................................F
1-e-and-a-2-e-and-a-3-e-and-a-4-e-and-a
..............................................G
1-e-and-a-2-e-and-a-3-e-and-a-4-e-and-a
Am..................................................F
1-e-and-a-2-e-and-a-3-e-and-a-4-e-and-a
..............................................G
1-e-and-a-2-e-and-a-3-e-and-a-4-e-and-a
Am..................................................G
1-e-and-a-2-e-and-a-3-e-and-a-4-e-and-a
.................................................. ...F
1-e-and-a-2-e-and-a-3-e-and-a-4-e-and-a
..............................................G
1-e-and-a-2-e-and-a-3-e-and-a-4-e-and-a
So where the F and G chords 'push', that means they're played an 8th note of the rhythm ahead of the next downbeat.
The verse pattern uses a similar rhythm, but the empases are a bit different. The orange text is where she doesn't play or lightly plays and the bolds are where there is emphasis.
1-e-and-a-2-e-and-a-3-e-and-a-4-e-and-a
It's not so much that Nancy's not playing over those beats as much as it is that she's emphasizing.
Have fun with this! This is definitely a blast to play. It's a great one to play with friends.

Well done Todd!
Nice choice of song too, and I agree Nancy rocks!

Thanks YouToo, Neil, and Steve..
For Heart fans, you have to watch this video from the 70s. It's awesome stuff. Hair blowing in the wind, great vocals, beautiful women rocking out...

And Steve.. no offence taken whatsoever! In fact, I greatly appreciate the time you took to write out that mini-lesson.
The reason I love this place is that experts and accomplished players take the time to help out folks like me who are just picking up the guitar. After a year and a half it still sometimes feels like a strange piece of plywood in my mitts. I listened to my take again and winced a few times at some strums that missed the beat here and there, and then here and there again. Once that arm gets strumming it gets hard to control. I'm going to practice it again and follow your advice about emphasis and timing.

Hey Steve,
Glad you liked it.
I think you'll like this acoustic unplugged version too. A little less rockin' at least at the start. Same great voice and strumming though. You see Nancy's hands strumming up and around the sound hole in a pattern that makes it hard to emulate. Some strums are shorter up the neck and longer towards the sound hole. Cool sound though.
