  Maiden Voyage Allthumbs style.

This is a classic jazz piece I played an improv over some time ago. It was quite a challenge since it was all 7sus chords for the most part. Trying to jam over a bt that's more than 4 minutes long without getting boring was quite a trick for me. I played through it a couple of dozen times to get the feel for it and then just let fly and went where the chords took me. A couple of clunkers here and there, but thats why they call it improv. I did what Kirk tries to teach here. I thought chords, not scales or modes.

BTW. I used my Epi Alleykat for this. A semi hollow body that has a tone I love for jazz fussion kinda stuff.

Very nice, Marty!

Is that bt on the PT forum, or can you upload it here?

It's on the P.T forum Sid. With all those 7sus chords, I thought it would be a bit to tough for most of the folks here. However, if anybody wants to try it, just ask and I wiil post the bt here with the chord progression you need to play it..BTW Kirk has done a terrific take over this bt.

What are the chords? Sounds like G7---Bb7 to me.

Here you go Sid.8 bar intro D7sus then D7sus,F7sus X6 then Eb7sus to Db7sus. There are also some passing chords sprinkled in there too. Have fun with it.

OK, I can hear the D7sus - F7sus in the beginning part, but it's hard to tell when it changes to Eb7sus - Db7sus. And does it go back to D7sus - F7sus?

Here's how it goes...

D7sus-F7sus- repeat x4

Eb7sus-Db7sus- repeat x1

D7sus-F7sus- repeat x3

Eb7sus-Db7sus- repeat x1

D7sus-F7sus- repeat x3

Eb7sus-Db7sus- repeat x1

D7sus-F7sus- repeat x3

At least I'm pretty sure that's it. It doesn't seem that difficult to me because all the chords are of one variation, you just move that shape around.

Now that I've said that I hope I can come up with something that doesn't suck.

Indeed, soloing longer than a minute or so, and staying FRESH, takes a bag of tricks

I hear you. I belong to a private forum that posts a 5 minute bt every month. Some of them are brutal to try and keep interesting. I look at them as a learning tool so I try to focus on keeping it interesting with melody rather than fxs. Some of my friends will go through every effect they have or play parts of it with different instruments, anything to fill that time space. It is always great fun to see what everyone comes up with.
