My DIY Strelevarius
A while back I mentioned that I had another guitar on the drawing board. I wasn't expecting to do it until fall. As I'm not taking off for the summer until the middle of May, I couldn't help myself and decided to work on it.
This is my idea of Tele with Strat mixed with a little Stratavarius. I used clear pine for the back, walnut layer for a perimeter exposure and a flamed maple top. It is chambered. The neck is 25 1/2" scale maple/rosewood. P-90 in the neck with a walnut cover and Vintage 50 single coil in the Tele bridge. I made a walnut cover for the bridge. It is easily removed for playing. Two volumes, 1 tone and a 3-way switch. Unfortunately I'm short a knob for now.
I'm surprised how quiet the single coils are. I shielded all the cavities; I'm sure this helped.
The Logos are my design, for what it's worth.
I'm quite pleased with the finished colour. The finish is a hand rubbed Tung oil. It seems to have a vintage, relic look.
I'm sure there are purists out there shaking their heads. I usually don't take the well beaten path. If I'm going to build a guitar, I might as well build something I vision.

Very well done congratulations on your new family member
Seems like I've been having one of those days
Since sometime back in 1998
And a turnaround is surely on the way
Or maybe that's me spinning down the drain

Suddenly I feel very inadequate. That is beautiful work. Congratulations on producing something that so many factories couldn't.

Beautiful! I'd never heard of Purple Heart until you posted one of your guitars. Then the other day I was watching American Chopper building a Peavey Bike. When they were at the Peavy factory they showed a Peavey guitar with Purple Heart.

I feel priviledged to have rubbed sholders (not literally) with someone of your talented craftmanship.

Thx for the kind comments. My aim in posting something like this, is to give encouragement to anyone that has a desire to build a guitar to try something different.
lcjones: I buy my necks on e-bay for now. They are quite a nice neck for the $30 CAD. Will eventually make my own for the challenge.
Europa: Time wise it's hard to say. Since I'm retired I don't seem to be a clock watcher. But it certainly would be nice to have a few lifetimes to truly enjoy all the things available.
Allthumbs: I think I'll need another lifetime to get anywhere good at playing guitar. LOL. I certainly am not on that level of recordings I hear here.

MCH - that's another absolute beauty. Your guitars are as much works of art as they are instruments.

Very nice. I love the look of this guitar.
I actually designed a bunch of plywood "air guitars" in high school, and there was one in particular I always wanted to make for real, maybe I'll get around to that eventually!

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule
Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
Buy it now for only $10 |
