Dare I say another Lapsteel....
When my son saw my first diy Lapsteel he thought he would like to have one. As he's a big fan of Ben Harper I decided to kick it up a notch for this build, that's the evolution of diy. This lapsteel is a lot deeper, about 3" deep, to accomadate a hollowed body and hollowed neck; in the style of the Weissenbourn. The bulk of the guitar is pine with a 3/4" mahogany top. As mentioned the body and the neck are hollowed out. The fret board is alternating pieces of purpleheart and maple. On this design I decided to change the bridge and neck nut to a purple heart base with a metal string holder. I utilized a self designed top loading string thru ( I don't have long enough drill bits for the normal string thru) that seems to work out quite well (this is made also of purpleheart which is a very hard wood). This build is also utilizing a humbucker pickup (on hand), but will probably replace with a P-90 style pickup later on.
After stringing it up and giving it a few strums, I think the hollow body seems to give the guitar a more 'airy' sound compared to my solid body lapsteel.
Hopefully my son will be pleased with this build.
cheers
