Howdy from a San Francisco area Newbie
Hi, I'm Ron
Newbie to the site as well as to the wonderful world of guitar playing. A little about me:
I've always had a love of music, but never a knowledge of it. My past experience lies pretty much in the area of platic childhood recorder flutes and a few notes hunt and pecked on an old out of tune acoustic my family had lying around. I spent hours in my room figuring out the opening riff of Smoke on the Water.
About a year ago I met a really wonderful gal who plays piano and keyboards and is a singer. We met through our mutual interest in Harleys but we went to a number of concerts together and that musical bug hidden deep inside me strated clawing its way to the surface until one day I happened across a flyer from Guitar Center and my heart started racing. I did some research, but there is a limit to what you can do when you don't play, and believe me, I do NOT play, although I'm getting there.
So, off I go to the store and what do I come home with but a beautiful new Epiphone Les Paul Custom in vintage cherry sunburst, plus a Marshall 30 Watt practice amp. Yep, I know the Gibson purists will cringe, but hey, it sounds pretty darn good for a starter guitar and many folks would consider it worthy of almost any level of talent, and for me, it's perfect. Man I am soooooo stoked and I have been struggling away with the Hal Leonard home course DVD and book, plus exploring a few things from my cable company On Demand service. I'm not through anything end to end yet, but have learned stuff from several rock & roll songs that I like. I couldn't get the built in effects on my amp to match what I wanted so now I acquired a serious pedal fetish and have picked up a few over the past 2 weeks.
Of course I also took advantage of one of those "No Payments for a Year" sales to pick up a Takamine G series acoustic which is nice for when I want to sit and practice some chord progressions.
I'm about due for lessons and will probably start those after the Christmas insanity has tapered off. I can't wait to finish my first song end to end. My voice is awful, but I suspect my girlfriend will be encouraging despite that. She has now started playing the bass she has had for a year, so I'm dragging her along with me, and we're having a blast practicing together.
OK, I better stop here and go do some reading as well.
Cheers,
Ron

Reply to your introduction: YOU GO GIRL. NO, not really, but good on you!!!! I hope your gf inspires you with confidence, and well, we all need that in order to sing/song write... I love to song write myself, and well, you GO. Let yourself teach yourself that you can do it without anyone, that it actually comes from within... I have faith in you, because it sounds like you want to achieve your goals... GOOD ON YOU AGAIN. Take care, and I look forward to hearing what you've got for songs when YOU are ready...from one songwriter to another. Keep on keepin' on... ~Fingerswon'tstretch.

Thanks Everybody
I truly appreciate the warm welcome, and when I get to that point of playing my first song, I'll make sure to grab a recording of it post up.
Until then, I'll be browsing around here as well as some other sites and combining a mix of self-teaching with a few lessons when I think it's time to do that.
I'm off to exchange a case for my Takamine as they gave me one that's too small. What do you think the chances are I'll walk out of there with just that?
He he, I know - it's hopeless!
Cheers!
Ron

Hi Ron, welcome. Browse a few other sites by all means, some good stuff out there, but I'm sure you will keep coming back to this one. It's the best.

Hi Ron. I'm from the S.F. Bay Area too. Only now we live near Stockton.
I love Epipohones! I have two Epiphones. My Epiphone Les Paul Standard has the most flawless finish. I upgraded it with some real Bill Lawrence pickups.
Anyways, just wanted to say Welcome.

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule
Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
