Seattle to Port Orchard Blues

I haven't posted before because I have been having some physcal problems and its just pretty hard to play when people are plunging large needles into your spine. I have always liked the guitar from the first time I heard our family friend play an electric in his backyard to the garage band my older brother formed in the sixties. I like the whole thing. The problem I have is paying attention and being older. I can't change being older but paying attention can be done.(its just hard for ADD people) I have been picking up the six strings lately and I am having fun but I am very disorganized. I have lots of books etc....but I need a teacher. I can't afford a teacher. Would someone please send me a teacher! Barring that (no pun intended) I hope to be in a retirement type zone in about 6 more years but I want to have picked up some skills before then. Help me or don't but here I am, just another burnt out Postal Employee who is sick of hearing people say,"Oh, you work at the Post Office? Your not going to go POSTAL on me, are you?" The correct answer is,"No I'm one of the nice ones but I would still like to crack you one on the nose for saying that."

Hi tackitybits, welcome aboard!

I'm afraid I can't help you out with the teacher thing being that I'm slightly out of your way geographically speaking.
But, I'm sure that you will get loads of help on this forum from lots of our members who are ready and willing to help if they can.
All you have to do is ask, and I'm certain someone will be bound to have some good tips for you.

Regards
Neil

Ask us questions about stuff your having trouble with and we will help as much as we can. It can be a pain trying to learn this instrument with a learning disability. I'm dyslexic so I hear where your coming from.

Wait, wait! I can see I may have created the wrong impression. I was just trying to convey some humor. Okay maybe a tiny bit of humor. Alright, alright sometimes when you try too hard it doesn't come out right. I have learned most of the "open" chords. What do you think I should do next?

You say you've learned most of the open chords. Can you expound? Before you head in to another world of guitar playing, my questions would be ....

How comfortable are you with switching between chords?
Do you have a repertoire you can play on demand?
Do you add in minors or 7th's in your playing?
Can you play an open G from the 7th fret?
Are hammer-on's and pull-off's part of your practice?
How is your rhythm progressing?
Are you doing 3/4, 4/4, 6/8 or other timings?
Have you home recorded a tune you could post for us to listen to?

Just wondering....

Les

My brother Mike has a saying about people who don't know what they are talking about, in this case myself. I do believe in coming clean, however, and after reading the moderators reply to my post, I think I can only classify myself as an at the beginning beginner. I didn't really have a through understanding of the terminlogy I was reading and so must reverse the claim that I know "open" chords. I don't have a repetoire. I can't really play much of anything, yet. I just got bored because Kumbaya is not high on my list of hit tunes. If anyone wants to know the saying my brother uses to describe people who don't know what they are talking about, just let me know the limits on words with four letters in them.

Hey T-bits,

Kumbaya, eh? Well, that three chord progression is in darn good ..... hint to the four letter word thing .... darn good company. Believe me! Kumbaya led the way for the 60's Folknik avant garde. The melody is timeless. Some would deem the song dead, others would gather 'round the campfire and without hesitation, become enthralled by the tune, group hug and come out singing!

Bob Dylan, Kingston Trio, Smother's Brothers, Joan Baez, Pete Seeger, Arlo Guthrie, Roger McGuinn, Donovan, Judy Collins, The Weavers, Peter/Paul & Mary, The Sand Pipers, Hootenany... ad infinitum!

You're in good hands, my friend! And as my hero would say, "we're all in this together".

Les

I think I can safely say my whole little family loves all those players you mentioned. We like Arlo the best, but I like Pete and Woody. I just want to progress. I love to sing. I just want to understand the music.
