Utterly New

I bought a guitar a few years ago with all good intentions of learning to play it and, wouldn't you know it, it's hard to learn to play an instrument while you're trying to finish college. Well, now I'm all done (okay, I've been done for three years) and my brain is requiring some new stimuli so here I am. It's a beautiful instrument and just my plinking sounds beautiful in my ears so I know I'm somewhere I want to be.

While I'm here, I've a question. When I try to hit a G major I keep getting my third finger in the way of the second string, causing muting and vibration. Will the guitar gods strike me down if I finger the chord a totally different way, I've found one that works well, or should I just figure a way to get my fat fingers out of the way of one another.

Jordan

Welcome thakkis
Your problem might be the angle of your wrist, any way some people omit their index and use their pinky for the bottom string, I always say the end justifies the means

Hello Jordan, welcome aboard!
I haven't really found fingering G Major much of a problem, but perhaps try using the middle, ring, and pinky when fingering the chord OR if that doesn't work, try index, middle, and ring OR vice versa.

Anyway, good luck!

It comes with time and practice. Consider it a warmup for the dreaded F chord.
