Another newbie to guitar
Hi everyone ,
Joined several weeks ago and been lurking , and figured it was time to introduce myself.
I am new to playing the guitar , picked up a new Strat HSS and a Fender bullet 150 amp about a month ago , and having fun .
Taught myself to pick a 5 string banjo back in 81 , and put it up for 12 years and got the hankering to play again, got it out and after 15 minutes of picking my 3 picking fingers up to my elbow was killing me, as carpel has set in my fingers from 30 years of being in the automotive industry .
The guitar is much easier on the right hand , but the left hand doesnt want to stretch very easily , but its coming around
Well back to practicing !

A banjo? How cool I wonder why it only needs 5 strings and if you can still play the same like a guitar.

Yes the guitar can be picked like a banjo with the 3 picks ( 1 on thumb and 2 on the index & ring finger )
I used to go to the Blue Grass Festival here in Windfield Kansas , and seen many pick the guitar like this , but these people are so talented they can all play any string instrument !!
Went to go and see the Flat picking championships , and I swear you could see strings smoke from such fast picking
It was even fun to walk through the camp grounds , as around every camper there were groups just playing and having a good time , people would just walk right up and join in . It was amazing , as people from all over the world come for the event.
Google Walnut Valley Festival And read all about it
I posted a link but it said I have to post more then 10 times before I can URL a link.
And thanks for all the Welcomes

Welcome Spraytech ! I know what you mean about needing to stretch the left hand, I just started playing myself and it does takes some getting used. Slow but sure...
Hope you have fun, and good luck with your carpal.

Welcome spraytech! Yes, still trying to stretch the left hand more like u said. Sometimes I pick up my finger with my other hand and place it where it needs to be. Of course, my finger just slides right back to where it shouldn't be!!
Welcome!

And here I thought I was the only one that had fingers with a mind of their own ........ I dont feel so bad now
I am almost believing the saying " Cant teach an old dog new tricks "
For all you youngsters out there , try the things you want to now while your body is fairly nimble , it should come to you alot faster !
The nice thing is I have not came across the hurting fingertips , as my hands are so calloused up from sanding cars for so many years the sand paper has made them thick .

Give it a try
I dont have mine any more as I traded it for the Strat HSS and the Amp .
They gave me a heck of a deal , as I payed 400 bucks for the George Washburn B-14 Banjo back in 1981( which retails now for 1000 bucks ) .
I only had to pay 200 bucks for The strat and amp.
The banjo wasnt to hard to learn , as the hands werent to beat up yet as I was 21 at the time

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule
Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
Buy it now for only $10 |
