Hi all,
My name is Trish and I'll be learning to play the electric guitar. I'll be getting a Washburn X8 in a couple of days. My 12-year-old son is autistic and the docs all say that a hobby would be good for him...this is what he chose, so we'll be learning together. I'm so excited!

Hi Trish - welcome to the forum and to learning the guitar. You'll get as much help as you want here - and even more. Will you also be taking lessons with a local teacher?

And I'm sure I'll need all the help I can get. LOL I won't be taking lessons - not in the budget right now. But the principal at my sons' school plays and he'll be giving Dakota (my son) some lessons during school.

Hi Trish
Welcome! Music is a wonderful bonding agent, and it's teriffic that you can share the experience with your son in the process.

Wouldn't even think about starting something and not following through with it. I played clarinet in junior high and high school, so I have at least some musical background going into this new venture.

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule
Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
