Hi! Newbie interested in slide and open tunings

Hi!

I've been playing guitar for about a year. For some reason I have drifted towards open tunings, (open E mostly), and slide guitar, (mostly electric). I've looked around the net and haven't come up with many resources that cover slide from beginner to higher levels. Does anybody know of any resources?

Thanks,
Patrick

p.s. My 8 year old son plays too. He's been playing for the same amount of time and he's way better than I am. He plays standard tuning. (You can see him on YouTube if you search for "green onions kid guitar". He's the little one playing the Schecter).

These guys are really big on open tunings. They should be able to point you to links of what you want to find.

Kirk is the best slide playeer in the world, he is also the main reason for this site being here... He does all the free movie lessons for guitar. There is a full section with some slide tunes that you could learn, also some lessons on how to do it...

If you are not satisfied with this yet check out Kirks Slide Guitar CD, which he released only a couple of weeks ago.

Only a slight correction WernHalen, it is a slide DVD that Kirk has just put out and it is excellent! But Kirk plays slide in standard tuning with the exception of the low E string which is tuned down to D (dropped D tuning). I don't know anything about playing slide guitar in open tunings but I suspect it's easier (initially) because I think there must be less concern for muting unwanted strings. But with special tuning for slide, you can't really swap back and forth between regular guitar and slide without having a second guitar. If you check out his bottleneck website mentioned above, he has a number of songs on there that he is playing slide guitar in. It's awesome! Good luck.

Yeah, just last night he was blowing me away with this rockabilly groove thing he had going.

All he was doing was playing one or two notes on the low E string and then an E chord and an A chord in quick succession, (E chord on the downstroke A chord on the upstroke). He showed me what he was doing so I could try it, but after a few cycles I would lose the rhythm. He was playing it really fast! He always likes to play fast. When he learns something new he plays it at full speed right from the start. It will start out sloppy and then get cleaner and cleaner over time. Most people start slow and then speed it up, not him.

He said to me, "Dad, you spend too much time studying guitar and not enough time playing." Oh well, at least he's my kid.

Honestly though thats probably the best way to do it lol.... Don't be scared of it and jump right into it, thats why I think kids learn quicker and better. Most aren't worried bout how others will view their playing so they just jam away.
