New from the Philippines

Hi. I'm new here in the forum. I'm planning on buying an electric guitar and i signed up in this forum because i feel that it can teach me alot about guitars . By the way i would like to ask, what are the tools or gadgets that i'd need to start with. Is it ok to just buy the electric guitar and a small amp first? What other gardgets do i need to get?

Hi and welcome. Don't forget to buy a pick (plectrum). Are you a complete beginner to music (not just guitar)? If so then you might have tuning problems at first, especially with new strings that take time to settle at their intended pitch - An electronic tuner will be the least frustrating way to cope with this (temporary) problem.
Good luck - and keep asking questions. It's the key to success.

Welcome. I think fret pretty much covered it. Be sure to ask what gauge of strings are on the guitar and write it down somewhere so you can buy the same gauge again. Ask if the guitar has been set up. It can make a huge difference to the playability of the guitar. Google for reviews of a guitar your interested in to see what other players think of it.
Same for the amp. Good luck.

HI i'd recomend you try a few differant weights of pick just to find one that is comfortable, also learn all your major and minor chords in open position and get a capo so you can play in diferant keys, and like the fretsource said a tuner is a valuble resource when starting out

The Amp is sooo important so consider that when buying with your budget, I would recomend either a Roland cube series (Micro, cube 15 or 30) or the Vox Valvetronix AD30VT or 15. These have great effects built in so much so that you dont need loads of pedals or stack Marshall to get the tone you are emulating (The VOX 30 has various wattage output so you can turn it down to just over 1 watt to get a good crunch without breaking windows). Electronic tuner is a must, Korg do a nice cheap one the GA-30 that has a needle indicator so you can get it spot on. Picks again, buy loads as they will be all over the house, your pockets and under books you are leaning from. Also various gauges from .66 up to 1mm to start as they do sound different when you play. A strap and a guitar stand to finish and you would have a nice set up.

Thanks for the reply everyone! So that's Amp ( Roland cube series (Micro, cube 15 or 30) or the Vox Valvetronix AD30VT or 15 ), Electronic Tuner ( Korg or GA-30 ), Picks ( lots of em ), Gauges ( .66 up to 1mm ) - Strings right? Haha NOOB. In terms of instrument playing, yes im a complete beginner. Thanks for the help guys. I'll try to post again when i get my equips. Wish me luck hehehe.

I have a friend who was born in the Philippines and goes back to gig there quite a bit. Does a lot of concerts with his acoustic 10 string though he used to be quite active in the rock scene over there before he moved to the states. He is the player in the red t-shirt playing lead. His name if perf. Maybe you have heard of him

Welcome, I don't know if this would help you out any but when I first started picking out quitars and equipment, I like expensive guitars and big loud amps and all the gadgets... whew! But the one thing I was told that made the most sense, was when my friend told me that hey all you should do initially is buy you a used guitar, restring it, a 10-15 amp, a pack of hard picks, and just beat it to death while you are initially learning how to play... but I said yeah but I want that vintage blah blah blah! So I started with the used items and learned my way a bit better... but of course got tired of it and started buying higher priced stuff and all. Me personally I would recommend something low cost first.. and besides if you ever decide that guitar isn't for you (couldn't imagine that) then you're not stuck with 1000's of dollars of gadgets and stuff you just stick in the closet and never look at. Start low first, then go high.
