Hello Everyone -New Guy Here
Hello Everyone. I stumbled across this forum and found that it has been really helpful as I have made the decision to learn to play the guitar. I am just starting out and have not had my first lesson or even purchased the instrument yet, which I am shopping for this week! Looking forward to reading more and learning as much as I can.

Welcome to the forum Fonz and good luck with your guitar purchase . You'll find some posts on the forum relating to this kind of thing but the main idea seems to be to "shop around" and find a guitar that you are comfortable with and enjoy the sound of.

Hello fonz, and everyone else. I am new here too. Been playing off and on for 4 years, but just decided to get serious about it 2 months ago. Now I am practicing ALL the time. It has become an addiction! Fonz, how much do you want to spend on your first guitar?

I have a sammick acoustic that only cost me 180 bucks and I love it! Sounds great and looks good too. What brands do you like?

In the 180 range, Oscar Shmiitts are not bad. I would look in pawn shops for a markdown in that price range. I have seen Norman electric acoustics go for as low as 170 second hand. The rest of the Godin products are above the 180 range unless you get lucky in a pawn shop. I have also seen a seagull for 230 Canadian in a pawn shop. Some folks here like the Fender acoustics which I think can be had around that price.

I am looking to spend around $400 - $500 on the first one. I was looking at a Takamine EG531SSC,however, I took a friend who has been playing for quite awhile and we found an Ibanez AEL20E which he thought was a great guitar for the price. Good action, rich sounds, and built in electronics with tuner.

Hey Fonz, welcome to the forums! Lots of great information here.
I was looking around local guitar shops today, and two of them in my area will let you take the guitar home for a week to play (of course you have to put a deposit down on your credit card)! But what a great way to try it out and see if it is for you. You may have similar shops where you are.

That price range will get you well into the realm of a "good" rather than inexpensive instrument for a beginner. Depending on what you are looking for you might not even have to spend that much.

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule
Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
