Belated Intro from AX7221

I live in massachusetts u. s., i started playing guitar 8 years ago when i was in eigth grade. i played on and off throughout high school, but i didnt get very good, i didnt learn scales nor chords (this is what i sounded like http://www.geocities.com/rcory44/music/11.29.02.mp3 http://www.geocities.com/rcory44/music/thegoodone58.mp3 http://www.geocities.com/rcory44/music/t3s3n1_35.mp3 ). I stopped for 2 years after highschool and have taken it back up again in full swing for the last year.

All my playing revolves around soloing. For example right now i'm learning chords for the purpose of making backings for soloing, also i'm trying to learn fingerpicking so i can make backings.

Official Welcome, AX ...

I had a quick listen to your early mp3s, you obviously have a natural affinity to making music. It's good that you've taken it up again.

Yes, learn as much about chords as you can, for they are the fundamental structures of any tune, the scaffolding that supports it all, including melody, riffs, licks and solos. If you were to disassemble the chords of a piece of music, you'd be looking at the scale or scales that underlie it all, but you'd be seeing it all in the context of each moment ... that comes in very handy because music does in fact come one moment at a time.

Learn scales also, find out what they are, how they differ ... learn about everything you can, if only to feel OK about forgetting about a lot of it when you've really absorbed it.

Most importantly, enjoy the journey, because (if you're anything at all like me) you will never be pleased with your playing, you will always want and need to learn more, you will always hear others playing things you wish you could ... there is no destination, as it all turns out, just the journey.

I like that, it reminds me of a dylan quote i heard one time, the musician is never arrives but is in a constant state of becomming. a little less than a year ago i thought if i learned all the chords and scales than i did it, and that was it, but then the more i learned theory the more there was and the more soloing i listened to the more expansive it got. i was disappointed atfirst, but what would i have done if i actually did "do it"? do i just stop getting better? Now its a ocean of avenues to take that keep going, which cool to think about
