you need to decide what kind of music you want to play, what style, finger or pick. Start with simple chord songs and move on to harder stuff when you have learned them. Learn your major,minor,7ths,9ths. augmented and diminished chords. With those you can play just about anything. Practice playing each note of a chord til you get a feel for the musical structure of the chords, each type of chord has the same stucture ie 135 for major,1b35 for minor etc. Then play the notes around the chords to hear how they fit against the notes in the chord. A good way to do this is to record a simple slow 3 chord blues and jam over it.
Once you are comfortable with bar chords and can play some tunes, I highly recomend buying Kirks Plane Talk book and DVD. It is not for absolute beginners so wait til you have some playing time under your belt first. I went from not being able to jam to feeling comfortable jamming over almost anything in just 8 months and I am a slow learner.
hope that helps.

Ok, here goes. Learn to think of notes in terms of numbers. Chords are made up of cetain notes in a scale. For major chords, it is always the first note in the scale., which is called the root, the 3rd and 5th note of the scale. In the key of C for instance 1=C, 3=E and 5=G. All majors are 135. Write out the intervals in the Key of C. C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C. Write the numbers underneath them1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8. Now you can biuld chords if you know what numbers or intervals make up that Chord. Keep in mind that there are sharps or flats bewtween some of those notes. So compare the formula for the chords against the notes they line up with. minors 1,b3,5. A minor always has a flat third. A 7th is just adding the 7th note etc. There are a few more rules that go along with chord construction but, you get the idea. Here is a link to a chord finder that shows almost all the chords you will ever need using the intervals or numbers for the note positions.

chord house ::: guitar room (advanced) -- online guitar chords and scales

You will see that at that site that playing a C minor as an open chord at the nut is a tough one. Doing a bar chord is a lot easier. A capo , of which there are many styles, presses down on the strings behind the fret of your choice to change the key your playing in. If you cappoed at the 3rd fret, you would be playing in the key of G for instance. You could probably google for answers to some of your questions or buy a simple music book. There is usually someone hanging around here to answer questions so just ask. Good luck

I would like to suggest that you find someone who plays guitar and have them show you some basics. I have a website with some information you might find useful as a beginner:

http://www.jcdisciples.org/guitar/beginning.html

Also

Good luck and don't give up. Its worth the effort.

7 chords is probably all I know and I've been playing almost 30 years.

It sounds like you're highly motivated and that's probably the single, biggest key to success in learning. 8)

There are easier ways then scales playing lead. If your heart is set on shredding then your stuck with scales. I don't use scales at all. When I was at the point you are now, I was fortunate enough to find Kirks' plain Talk book and DVD. I recomend it highly. I could never get anywhere with scales, but caught on to Kirks' method faster than I thought possible.
