Hello fellow guitar players

Hello fellow guitar players

I play guitar for about a year now and I love it!!! I practice every day
I got my guitar for my birthday last year together with lessons from a teacher,
He is very satisfied about me and tell me I am one of his "good" students...haha

Last week I bought the guitar I always wanted and never thought I could play on it a little a Takamine sevens, the Garth Brooks model

When I practice I play mostly chords and finger picking, I can play a few songs, Richard Marx - Now & Forever, Garth Brooks - if tomorrow never comes and Much too Young, Kenny Loggins Return to Pooh corner, witch I am still learning, and I can read tabs,
A year ago I never could imagine that I could do these things so I am a happy guy

I love playing country songs and pop/rock

There is one thing do, I always have that feeling that I can do the songs better,
Like the A chord I always have problems with the A chord somehow, it don't feel right the way my fingers are on the strings, I'll guess it need more practice

I wonder how you guys practice, what is the best way?

Most famous guitar players begin very young of age and I am almost 30 so I realize I can never be as good as like guys such as Garth, Kenny Loggins or James Taylor haha

Thanks for taking the time to read my post

Maurice

PS: I love your site Kirk, I found it a few months ago and keep coming back ever since, The lessons are awsome...thanks!!

Hi Maurice. People tend to find ways to practice that suits them best. I love jammiing over backtrack so I do allot of that. I always make sure I know exactly where I am on the fretboard and what interval I am playing at all times. I also write out stuff on fretboard charts. Right now I am writing out two note double stops for each string set for all twelve keys. I am 53 and one of the guys on Kirks' other forums started playing at 73 so your never too old. If I could make a suggestion. Buy Kirks' book Plane Talk. I did and it cut years off the time it takes to improve. One thing you would learn is to play the A chord anywhere on the neck in whatever way feels best to your fingers.

Welcome Maurice, thanks for joining in.

You sound like you're very pleased with the fact that you took up guitar and find that you're a 'natural' at it. So you should be too, it's one of the finer things we humans can do on this planet. Making music will never cease to amaze me, and I've been doing it since 1961. The magic never wears off.

I'm glad you're enjoying the lessons ... I'll keep them coming.

Hi Maurice,

I have been playing for about ayear or so, and I was 53 when I started. You may be right when you say you won't be as good as Garth, Kenny Loggins etc., but it all depends on you! Do you want to be like them? Then it has to be your LIFE!!! For me, I want to be the best I can be,but I realize that means being a pretty good player and able to jam with some friends and be able to play in different keys. I know I will never be a pro, so I don't plan on giving 24 hours a day to the guitar. I just love the feeling I get when I learn something new, and somebody says hey, that sounded pretty good!

Hi Maurice,
I found your note interesting, I have been playing only for a year also, but I started at the age of 53, and I know I will never be another Kenny Logins but all i want to do is have alot of fun trying. As long as it remains fun who cares?, I practice every day ( I call it my middle age obsession) , so keep having fun and practicing and getting better.
Kind Regards
Jimbo
