Born in '40...took piano from three different teachers (momma made me). Can't play chopsticks . Have always liked music so decided to try the guitar in my old age.
Genre; blues, country. Artists; Merle Travis (say who), Clapton, Jimmy Reed.

Got my guitar (used Alvarez) Monday...working on toughening up fingers with about 10 minute sessions of CAGED chords. It was a little better today.LOL!!

Any sage advice for an old fart?

welcome, if you want to work on speed, the easiest way TMO is work on chromatic scales or parts of chromatics, in other words start on the low E string and play 0-1-2-3 ( E,F,F#,G) n go up on all strings, make sure you use a metronome, this could be your best source on developing speed, also i recommmend to start on nylon strings due to the reason it could be a real pain in the @$$ on your caluses(sp)

hope this helps

Hi there

Welcome and good luck with your playing. It's all just practice, practice, practice but you'll get there

Hi, Blueslover,

From one old fart to another, welcome! I started taking lessons at age 64. Am now 68 and enjoying every minute of learning blues and jazz. Have learned a bunch of cool chords and progressions, have gotten tough fingertips, and just beginning to get into improv and composition. Loving every minute of it! Twang on!

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule

Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!

Buy it now for only $10
