Howdoyado
Hi all. This looks like a cool place so I thought I would check it out. I've been playing for over thirty years and still always learning. I'm lucky to have come from a big musical family with some great musicians. My dad was a great fiddle player and that's the instrument I wanted to learn but for some reason (Rock n Roll) I ended up playing the guitar. I'm one of those guys that has to improvise all the time because my memory isn't what it used to be but it's kinda been a gift for on the fly creativity. I think it's real important for new players to learn scales and modes because it makes it a lot easier to learn songs and improvise etc... Now days it sure is easier to learn theory with all the great books, videos, computers and the internet. I've learned more in the past ten years because of these things than I ever did in the prior twenty and those boring classes I took when I was a kid just about killed me! Be Cool!

Welcome Brian!
It sounds like you've come to the right place.
I've been playing guitar for a long time too (started in 1967 when I was 15 [started piano in 1960 when I was 8!]) but you have a big advantage over me in that you've spent so much time in improvization. I started out as a "folkie" and got into some Rock n' Roll (ala Cream, Stones, etc) - and then classical as a music major in college - but I NEVER got into soloing/improvizing seriously until last summer and now I have so much to learn, so much to injest. I've fallen in love with the Blues - but I'm only a beginner in doing a decent lead and so I am starting all over again in a sense. I envy you!
Welcome!!!
Jim

Hi Jim. Sounds like you got a few calluses too. I'm no shredder by a stretch of my imagination. A lot of what I do can be considered unorthodox in approach, but hey! that's what makes us all unique. I'm a big blues fan myself and I draw a lot of my inspiration from that style of music.
BTW, My Dad always said every musician should know how to play the piano a little because it would help you to understand music structure etc..

Gidday Brian. Welcome. Like to improvise the Blues myself but I don't have the courage to admit it's largely 'cos my memory is shot these days too ....

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule
Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
