Finally going to learn

Afternoon all After 40+ years of using a tennis raquet to play along with I'm finally going to give it ago and learn to play a guitar. So far I've been at it 3 hours and my fingers hurt and my left hand resembles an arthritic monkeys claw but I'll get there.

Welcome Smoggy. Try to relax as much as possible while you play. Tension is your enemy.

A tennis raquet huh? I've even had the urge to steal someone's broom once, but hey... I don't want to let them think I'm a Harry Potter fan (So what if I were? ) But 40 years is a pretty long time to resist that temptation to the real thing But as many member here would say, it's never too late to begin playing the guitar!

And yes the hurting fingertips are quite normal. Watch the pain in the rest of the hand though. Your muscles aren't quite used to these strange motions and you need to give them their rest now and then. Also watch for unwanted muscle tension! That is, any muscle tension that's more than is required to create the sounds you want (cramping muscles, other unused fingers, arm muscles, shoulders etc.)

Hey smoggy, how ya doin' mate?

Welcome to the forum!
Back in the seventies, before I took up the real McCoy, me and my mate used to play around with a tennis racket pretending to be Jimmy Page and Peter Frampton. Eventually, like yourself, I preferred the genuine article to a tennis racket and I haven't looked back since.

Problem is, you wouldn't believe how many guitars I've broken trying to play a few sets with my son............................................... .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. ...............................nah, not really!

Anyway welcome!

Neil

Good luck Smoggy.
I was in your shoes a few short months back. I would recommend making sure the guitar is set up good. High string = sore fingers for sure.
Watch some of Kirk's video lessons and notice how lightly he fingers the notes (left hand). If you strive for that you will be way ahead of the game. You'll be faster sooner too as your not wasting energy and time squeezing the neck and strings, if that makes sense.
All the best,
Mike
