Word!

Hi all,

My name is James and I've been playing for about 5 years or so. I taught myself everything I know about the guitar which doesn't amount to much. I've been in a bit of a rut lately, feeling like I play the same 3or 4 chords in every song and just change the rhythm up. I'm in a band and I write all the rhythm for our songs which means that all of our songs are starting to sound alike. I figure if I try to learn a little bit about music and the way it all comes together on the guitar, maybe I'll be able to branch out a little more. So far it's looking good... who knew, right?

Sounds like your ready for Kirks' Plane Talk materials. There are a lot of people who buy it to break out of a rut.
Welcome to the forum. You should find Kirks' notes on song construction very helpful in his lessons. Lets hear some of your bands' tunes.

Yeah, I've been reading all of the free lessons today and I've allready learned alot about the chord structures and keys (not that I'll retain all of it) but I'm enjoying the site very much. I saw somewhere here in the forum that there was a place to upload tunes onto the site, but I have yet to stumble across it. You can hear us on MySpace (www.myspace.com/younglosephandthelaw) though, and when I find that "sound boothe" or whaterver, I'll upload some of them. We're still in the beginning stages for a band so please let me know what you guys think. I'll happily take any suggestions for making the guitar parts sound better!

PS
Sorry if I'm not supposed to put url's on here I wasn't sure.

Hi there, glad you're on board. It's perfectly acceptable to link to other sites, as long as they are not offensive. The recording booth can be found on the main forum index page, just above the section for Kirk's lessons.

Welcome James, good to have you joining!
If you ever feel that your not getting anywhere - check out Kirk's book and DVD Plane Talk!!

It's the last music instruction book you'll buy!

Welcome James

Btw, some mellow songs you got there on myspace. Maybe with Kirk's help you could put in some nice lead as well!

Welcome powe6563!
This place'll definately get you out of your rut. How did your band meet? I ask cuz I wanted to do the same thing, but I've gotta get my sound down first (only been playing for almost on whole month) so naturally I'm a pro (yeah right) anyways, welcome!!!

Hey, Jett!
Well I met Joe (the lead singer) when he moved in across the street from me about 4 years ago. We started hanging out and about a year later I was just messing around with my guitar and Joe just started singing. I was still very new to it back then (still am I guess) and I was just playing whatever chords I could manage. He has this abillity to just flow with the music and spit out awesome lyrics. So we got a tape recorder and went from there! We just recently added a Lead guitarist, Josh Green, who is phenominal. He's majoring in Jazz guitar at UM. I met him at church when I started putting together a band to lead the youth worship. Hang in there cause even though I'm still average after 5 years, my little brother picked it up about a year & 1/2 ago and he left me in the dust after about 6 months. That kid is incredible.

Cool. As for me I'm just practicing some of kirk's lessons. I don't know what it is, but I'm hooked! I stayed up half the night learning to switch from chord to chord without stopping. I still mess up sometimes and get that metallic sound a little. And I kinda have big fingers so muting is sometimes a problem. But As soon as I handle that, I'll post what I've learned.
I'll probably do that on myspace. my friends have been begging me to join. So keep a look out for me there! Can't wait to listen to your band's sounds.

PM me once in a while ok? I think we could be good friends.
