Smile   Greetings from Jim!

First of all -- I can't believe I was able to get the username 'Jim' with more than 10,000 members here! I was sure I'd have to choose something like "Jim999' but I tried 'Jim' and got it. So, that's a great start. Unless I'm the only person named Jim on this forum (and that would be pretty scary).

I've played guitar for almost 40 years, but until very recently it was almost all folk music, with some pop/rock thrown in occasionally. And being truthful, there was a long period of time in the 90's and early 2000's when I played very little. But I'm back at it full time now (when I'm not at my day job) and I'm pretty much back in shape. I also am a composer of neo-classical music and have a BA in music from Colby College. More details about my background are on my profile and website at http://jamessignorile.com/

I also have a more guitar oriented homepage on WholeNote at http://www.wholenote.com/members/jimsignorile/

For whatever reason (middle age?) I became obsessed about 6 months ago with listening to and playing Blues. Because of that, last September I re-acquired a Gibson Les Paul Goldtop Deluxe (I had a '72 original, but sold it in '75 to pay the rent). I've also had a Yahama FG-180 acoustic for over 30 years that's a faithful friend.

I just want to say Hi and thanks for having such a great community here! Oh, and I also bought the PlaneTalk book and DVD from Kirk about 3 months ago and I've learned SO much from that! It's one of the best ways of learning guitar I've seen.

Jim

Nice username, Jim. And welcome.

You know, I never thought about trying my name - my middle name is always a safe bet.

Hey there , Jim... I always thought that the name "Jim" was second in popularity only
to "John"... So, yes, it is a small miracle that, out of 10,000 people, no one has ever tried
to use it...!!!

Welcome to the fold... Hope to hear some of your music in the future...!!!!

Question   How do I edit MY posts?

How do I edit posts I've made?

I don't see an "Edit" button at the bottom of posts I've made - just a "Quote" button and a "Quick Reply" button....

It says at the bottom that I MAY edit my posts - but I don't know how!

Thanks!
Jim

OK - I'm editing this post because there IS an edit button at the bottom of this post - but not at the bottom of the two I made up above....

Jim, welcome to the forum. The reason I have a username of Si16 is because I wasn't clever enough to try Simon on its own. I thought that someone else would have taken it. There is a time restriction on editing your own posts. Read more here

Thanks Simon, and everyone else who responded.

I saw that in the FAQ about the possibility of time-limited editing of posts, but I couldn't figure out why that would be used, so I thought it might be something else. I still don't know why we can only edit our posts for a while (how long?) but if those are the rules, I'll just have to remember it and read my posts really carefully right away (I sometimes find typos later on that I like to fix, but...)

I have always wanted to be able to use Jim as my username on a forum, so I always try it first, but this is the first time I actually got to use it. I guess everyone else assumed their names were taken and so didn't bother trying (at least everyone else named Jim! )

Jim

Hi Jim, nice to have to you here too!

A while ago a whole thread with dozens of posts was reduced to zilch because a member went in a edited out the content of all his posts; nothing any of the other members had posted made sense without his there, in fact it made them all look a little foolish, so we decided to put a time restriction on editing. I think you have 10 minutes to check for typos.

Thanks for your nice comments about PlaneTalk!

It was 10 minutes, but I've recently changed it to 30 minutes to give members a little more time to edit their posts. The time limit on editing is in place on most forums, not just this one, for the reason outlined by Kirk above.

By the way, welcome to the forum Jim, good to have you here... I'm surprised you got Jim as your username too. I just did a search on other members using Jim in their username on here... and I've llisted them below There's quite a few.

Cheers

Clancy

Thanks Kirk and Clancy for the welcome and explanation about the editing thing - I understand now...

Wow - that's a lot of variations on Jim... I wonder if all those members just assumed they wouldn't be able to get Jim so didn't try, or if they wanted something a little more interesting. Probably a combination of both! I assumed I wouldn't get it either and was *really* shocked when I did get it. It must be a sign...
