hey Doogan jones,
just think of only 12 notes-that`s all there are, they just keep repeating over and over. if you only had 1 string (okay, a really, really long string!) you could play all the notes on the fretboard, they are just octaves of the same 12 notes. now, with standard tuning for example, the 5th note (from lowest to highest) is the next open string, except for the "B" (2nd) string and that is the 4th note on the "G" (3rd) string. i know, i know, bear with me, i said all that just to make this point... the RELATIONSHIP between notes NEVER CHANGES on any string EVER! therefore, if you know where (for example) the "A" note is on any given string, you also know that 2 frets down (same string) is a "G" and 2 frets up( same string) is a "B" etc. etc. also, if lets say you know where "A" is on the 4th string, the note (same fret) on the 3rd string will be a "D" and this applies to any note anywhere on the fret board (2nd string rule still applies!) whew! maybe i should`nt have had that 2nd cup of coffee.......Anyway; maybe most of you see this "note relationship" almost instantly - i did`nt. but when i finally had this "revelation" the fretboard became way less complicated and the "scales" are just anotated pictures that kind of appear in my head for any given "note" scale.
p.s. this rant was intended to "help, not hinder" you.....schwartz
