BRAND NEW-Need help...

Hello everyone.

I have loved guitars for so long and I just worked up the nerve to buy my own.I have a few questions and I hope that you all can help me.

1.Do I really need picks? My fingers and picks do the same thing right?

2.If I am only going to play at home alone do I need to tune the guitar?

3.What accesories are a MUST for the beginner?

4.What is a good dvd learning program?I don't live in an area that has classes.

I hope that these questions don't sound silly because I am Really a beginner.Thanks.

Hi cuteazz1, Welcome to the forum here's my attempt at answering the questions hope they help.

1.Do I really need picks? My fingers and picks do the same thing right?

Some people like picks some don't, it's a personal choice. I just use my fingers, my playing hand has slightly longer nails than my other hand so act similatr to picks but that again is a personal preference, probably best to just start off with your fingers but that is just my opinion.

2.If I am only going to play at home alone do I need to tune the guitar?

Yes you definitely need to tune your guitar and keep it in tune, you will be learning notes and chords and if you aren't in tune nothing you do will sound right and you will slowly go mad, so that's essential.

3.What accesories are a MUST for the beginner?

Not much really, the essential in my opinion is a tuner, a metronome is useful for keeping time, a guitar strap is useful as you might want to play standing up and sitting down, oh and a spare set of strings is good, strings can sometimes break when you start off happened to me and without a spare set you're progress is stopped dead so I'd recommend those.

4.What is a good dvd learning program?I don't live in an area that has classes.
I can't really answer this one as I haven't used DVDs, there are a lot of resources here and online for learning and this site gives you access to lessons you can buy, I'll have to leave this question to another member.

I hope that these questions don't sound silly because I am Really a beginner.Thanks.

No none of your questions are silly, if there are any problems ask a question, we are all here to help each and we enjoy helping out if we can, so keep asking the questions, hope I've helped in some way and have fun.

Thanks for your response. So A Metronome is a digital tuner with time on it?I'll go look it up.

O.K. If I never played the guitar how will I know if something is in tune? Is the difference that obvious?

I will take a trip to the city in 3 or 4 weeks and go to the guitar store, but in the meantime i will hound All of you with my questions.....Thanks.

Hi cuteazz, the metronome has a hand that ticks and keeps time for you, the best tuner is a chromatic tuner that tells you when you're in tune, you can get tuners that also incorporate a metronome they are useful, it depends on how much money you have to spend here's a link to a tuner lesson. you

Basic tips on using a tuner

You'll know if it's way out of tune as it will sound awful, as your ear develops you'll be able to pick up the slightest note out of tune, it develops over time and you become quite skilled at it, an electronic tuner will get your guitar in tune and when you've done it a few times it becomes second nature. Guitar is a big learning curve but it has big rewards.

Hi Cute:
Just in case you havent noticed. At the top of this sites web page is a bar "online tuner". It works really good and since you are here, may as well use it until you decide what tuner youre going to get.
