Playing the Guitar for the First Time
Well, you know what? I just started playing the guitar 5 months ago. The first week, I already played a song. Though it wasn't that good, at least, I did get to play it. All you need is determination! I'm so determined to play the guitar. So, I did get to play it easily!

I started by getting a beatles book ( ok I know, it was a long time ago ) and learned chords and after a while you'll play them better and better. Your fingers will hurt, but you will build up calluses. I know you've heard it before but practice makes perfect. I believe that when you first start you will get frustrated but there will be a point that hard becomes fun, when you reach that point it's all down hill from there.

I'm new as well. The best way to change without stoping is to keep a steady beat no matter how slow it is. keep it steady and just go extremly slow so that you can think ahead to the next chord. Then, gradually pick up the tempo.

Greetings:
Be warned; unless you are some king of a prodigy, you are going to suck for a little while ;-) On the other hand, you can make something like music pretty quickly. What I did when I started was learned how to finger a few simple chords, then instead of strumming I played them up and down one string at a time then I'd change the order (aka arpeggiation). I played this unplugged by the way on my son's Yamaha Pacifica which looks a lot like your setup. Then later I plugged it in when I thought others could bear the sound.
I thought this sounded pretty good and got me past the really sucking stage to where I am now, the kind of sucking stage. Next stop, bearable player, then by end of the year decent (I know I set high goals, don't I)
Have fun and never give up. You made a great choice - now stick with it.
Cheers

Hi Jon,
Welcome aboard. I'm new to this forum and new to guitar playing too. The early stages are the hardest. Runners talk about hitting a wall until they feel good and then they can get into a groove. It was like that for me with guitar. I smashed into the wall (and at times felt like smashing my guitar). But then you play one chord that sounds pretty good. Then one note. Then a simple melody. Then you build around it. Believe me, I'm not expert, but once you get hooked, well, it becomes a daily habit. You know the only way to get to Carnegie Hall, right?

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule
Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
