Eager, never played before but want to start
Hello Gang
My name is Mike. I've stumbled upon this site while searching for info on beginning guitar. I've never played before, I know nothing about reading music or anything beyond listening. I'm a HUGE RUSH fan though and would love to be able to play pieces of their songs!!!! If I do end up purchasing a guitar I want to do more than just play songs, I'd like to learn how to read music and some of theory behind playing guitar.
I've been considering buying an electric guitar(is starting with electric bad?) but I'm not sure at this point.
How much should a decent first guitar cost?
Should I pay for lessons or learn on my own?
Should I buy electric or not?
Thanks in advance
Mike

Keep in mind you need an amp too if you choose to start with electric. It is easier to go from acoustic to electric than the other way around.
What guitar you buy depends on what you want to play. As a Rush fan, look at what the lead player's guitar. Look at the kind of pickups he has on his guitar. We will help you find a decent first guitar. There are some bang for the buck electrics for 150 to 300. Same with acoustics.
Lessons are up to you. Some find this place enough and some take lessons too.

Welcome Mike. This place has been a big help to me along with jamming with friends, which is also a good way of improving.

Welcome. Look in the gear section on this forum for the sticky on buying a guitar. Also, you can check Harmony Central user reviews once you see a few models that interest you. Good luck.

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule
Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
