The 20 year beginner
Hi Kirk and all who read this. I have been playing guitar on and off for twenty five years. I play many songs very well as far as sitting around a camp fire with my acoustic and I do enjoy strumming those songs. But I have developed a need to advance myself. I am just now getting together with real musicians who really know what they are doing but the snag is I dont know the science of the neck or any scales to speak of. I do know scale patterns but I dont have the ability to play leads during jam sessions. You know the kind of sessions where everybody is playing a blues progression and all the guitar players take turns adding there own style and feel to the groove. I am basically as you call it a robot. I play leads fairly well when I can stair at them in tabs and listen to them and then practice them a thousand times note for note. My lack of knowledge on the neck is killing my ability plain and simple.

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule
Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
