Hi there!
Well, I've always wanted to learn how to play the guitar but I've finally decided to get out of my chair and do something about it. I've been researching how to buy an electric guitar and I think I'm finally ready to head down to the local stores and give them a look through. For what it's worth I'm an electrical engineering student and I've found that all the, well, electronic stuff's pretty neat.
I'm on a bit of budget, hoping to get all my equipment for around $700 and I've been eying the "Epiphone G-400 SG" for a little while (I love the SG look). I wouldn't mind being pointed at another electric guitar though.

Welcome, all I can say is try a number of guitar styles matched with a couple different amps. Don't get hung up on a certain "look" your first guitar should feel real nice in your hands and be set to play easy. Also with electrics the various pick ups and PU matching give a wide range of sounds, a lot to consider on that aspect. Have fun shopping around and good luck.
Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out.

Welcome to the forum kasdaye.
Not sure what the pricing etc for gear is in your neck of the woods, so can't offer any solid ideas on what guitars to get for your budget.
We are lucky enough to have other Canadian members here though and I'm sure they'll have some good suggestions for you.

Hello kasdaye & welcome. You can get some really good deals on ebay, just make sure to read the fine print & be careful with the knock-offs.

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule
Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
