Short Fingers

I have short fingers. There, I said it. All I want to do is play the guitar, but I am having huge difficulty in reaching just basic chords, especially my pinky. Is there anyone out there that suffers from the same problem that I do.? How did you get over it? is it just a practice thing, or am I destined not to be able to play?

Hi Terry & welcome. I too have short fingers, short legs, just short all the way around. It's possible your guitar is too big for you, you might want to head to your local guitar shap and see what feels comfortable. But you will find that even with the guitar you have now (unless it's a jumbo or fat) it takes a little but your fingers will start to cooperate, it just takes more for us with little hands.

Go to a guitar shop and try some parlour guitars. They have smaller bodies but, keep in mind young kids who have small hands seem to be able to learn to play guitar. In fact it is not that difficult to find Youtube vids of child prodigies playing guitar. You may not have their skills or natural abilities but, your hands are probably as large as some of the 10 year olds playing classical guitar.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcom and great advice. I'll snap out of the mindset that nature has delt a nasty blow. I'll have a good look around the website tonight for a couple of tunes that I can try and start off with. Maybe something simple from Oasis. At least I know their tunes enough to recognise if I have the tunes wrong. Cheers everyone.

Hi there Terry we all have our own short comings , you'll find yours will disappear with practice.

Hi Terry,
I also suffer from the short finger syndrome....the only cure...practice. That baby finger will find it's way....it's like the dancer who wants to do the splits....a little stretch at a time. Of course that's an analogy from a female point of view.
