Pre-beginner here!
Greetings!
Ok, so I havn't actually started playing yet, but I feel the need... I just have to wait a bit longer until I can find a time to go see my brother (who put the idea in my head to play) and buy my first guitar. After much looking, all sources indicate bring along a friend to buy your first one, he doesn't even know he "volunteered" for the job. It's either that of buy a starter kit from Amazon....
But I'm reading and learning as much as I can until then!

Hello Gizmocat,
You may want to read Kirks advise on guitars before you take the plunge. I struggled with the classical vs the steel string but I didn't know anyone who played classical and I hadn't made the decision to learn fingerpicking either. I did go steel string and it is a little tight getting the fingers working together. I think you can buy a decent classical for much less than an OK steel string. Check out some of the Spanish guitars out now. I would also highly recommend you play as many different guitars as possible. You will really feel a difference in the different models.
Good Luck
Mike

Hi Gizmocat. Taking an experienced player with you to help pick out your guitar is a good idea. Starter kits have a bad rep for poor quality so it is best not to go there. Good luck.

The best guitar in the world is worthless to you if it's not set up properly. Nobody sets up starter guitar 'packs'; they don't even open the box.

Thanks for the help everybody! I'm going down to visit my brother sometime in the next few months, and should be able to get myself setup through his contacts. Now all I have to do is wait.... I hate waiting.... nope, still not time yet... sigh...

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule
Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
Buy it now for only $10 |
