Hey Hey gang!!!
Hey guys, how are you all doing. Ill take this chance to introduce myself. My name is Marwan(YES my REAL name), im 18, male, and i live in UAE(dubay). Ive so little music experience. Ive always been a fan of music. 2 years ago i started playing the piano, then i stopped 1/4 of the way there cause i had to move then i never really got back into it. And now here i am. I dont OWN a guitar yet, my friend lent me his so i can try it out before actually buying one and giving up on it. What level guitarist i am? Well id say im stuck on switching the basic chords level. It takes me around 45 seconds to fret properly and my fingers are starting to hurt , but im getting there(i hope). Id also like to take this chance to thank all of you here for contributing to this website and making it really helpfull.
Cheers

Welcome!
Keep up the practicing! Your fingers will, in time hurt a little less every day you play. After that, it's all good!
Again Welcome Marwan!
Gary, not to be confused with Chuck Berry!

Hi Marwan, welcome. Yes, your finger tips will become tough and stop hurting ... you've got to make sure you play at least a little each day to maintain them, so make sure you do get your own guitar.
As for music itself ... it's not easy, nor is it hard. Explaining it is the most difficult thing about it.
Cheers,

Hey Marwan, welcome and let's make sure your fingers' hurting from training and not from poor action on the guitar. Is your friend knowledgable about stuff like that? Won't hurt to ask a pro somewhere.
Good luck and pick a riff!

well im training ( by myself ) , around some 6-7 hours i guess,,,ofcourse on and off. But im giving in as much as i can. Just out of curiosity though, how long would it take a person to get used to switching between the basic chords ( G, D , C, Em , Am). I know it differs from person to person, but can anyone give me an average. And by "Getting used to" i mean like really well, fast, and clean!! And another question, should i not move on to another step till i pass this one or should i move on and eventually that step will be learnt over time?
Cheers!!!!Thanks for the warm welcome btw.

I can't put a clock on it but eventually you're going to improve. How can you not?
Guitar playing is a lifetime commitment so take it easy because you'll end up with strain injuries and possibly bad habits. I would say a few weeks to start with before you'll get used to it. If you want to learn some basic chords start with C, A, G, E, and D. Later you can look up the "caged" system on how you can get familiar with your fretboard. It uses the chord shapes connected by octave points. *(deleted)*
EDIT: I made a boo-boo. Since I'm not familiar with Kirk's plane talk I made a generalization that are misleading so I have to withdraw that statement. My apoligies to you, Kirk, and others. His system are geared toward advanced players who's familiar with the chords already.
I guess it's time to retire from this forum so good luck y'all.

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule
Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
