One Last Try...
Hello from Austin, Texas. I would have said, "Howdy y'all", but someone beat me to it! I had tried to learn guitar a couple of times before on very cheap instruments, using the little beginners booklets that came with them. After learning a few chords I always quit, using my sore fingertips as an excuse. Maybe I could also partly blame the poor quality of those guitars themselves, but I'm sure it was mostly just me. Now that I'm older and have more in the way of disposable income, I'm giving it one last try. After doing a lot of online research, I decided upon the Seagull S6 Original and the "Learn and Master Guitar" tutorial. I got both just this week. So if I don't learn to play this time around, I certainly have only myself to blame!
A big part of my decision to take up guitar is my desire to change some very bad personal behaviors...smoking being by far the worst one. I will turn 55 a week from today and have been a smoker since I was 16. I'm going to quit on my birthday, and I realized I would need something besides watching tv and surfing the internet to keep my mind occupied in the evenings and weekends once the cravings really set in. So I decided that totally immersing myself in learning to play the guitar might help a lot...something I could really "lose" myself in and make the time go by much faster once the pangs start and I want to climb the walls. Something I could really enjoy, and get a sense of accomplishment from. And I can keep reminding myself that quitting my habit will quickly pay for the cost of the guitar and tutorial...and I'll live longer to enjoy my new and ever-expanding skill!
So...one last try, to learn one good thing, and rid myself of a very bad thing. Wish me luck!

Welc me aboard Cartwheel!
Good luck on kicking the smoking habit. I know how difficult it can be (trying to kick the habit myself), but I'm sure if you really dedicate yourself to the guitar, it could provide you with a very worthwhile distraction.

Hi Cartwheel, got a good guitar for the job, Seagulls are a quality instrument, good luck with giving up smoking, every time you want a cigarette you'll have to pick up the guitar, you should get carried away with your playing long enough for the craving to pass, quite a good idea actually. Welcome to the forum.

Hi Cartwheel welcome to the forum
I saw a werewolf drinking a pina colada at Trader Vic's,
And his hair was perfect.

Best of luck, Cartwheel. with both endevours. Maybe thinking that what you save on cigarettes will get you a truly fine quality guitar next year will help motivate.

Welcome aboard Cartwheel, just don't give up on playing this time, you'll get a lot of pleasure from it for the rest of your life if you stick with it.
Same with quitting smoking, don't give up trying if your plan doesn't work right away, I hope it does work right away though and wish you good luck.

Thanks
Thank all of you for the encouragement. There are many online guitar forums, as I've recently learned, but this one seems to stand out from the rest

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule
Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
