Hi all
Hi everyone
Finally got an electric guitar. After wanting one for about 16 years my wife bought me one for christmas, I was surprised she remebered. So instead of air guitar to my fav rock tracks I'll be doing it for real. Had my first lesson last week...totally hooked, fingers sore though. I learned A D and E chords.
Keep rocking peeps

A, D, and E? Alright! You've just learned your first I - IV - V chords in A major (or C major in Aeolian mode).
Don't worry if you don't know what it means but with I - IV - V chord progressions you've covered about 80% of the songs out there.
C - F - G (C major)
G - C - D (G major)
D - G - A (D major)
A - D - E (A major) <-you are here
E - A - B (E major)
I don't know if you're learning theory but I would start with C major so I'd learn about triads, intervals, and the chords of the C major scale without the sharps and flats to confuse me. The C major scale does not have sharps nor flats. Anyway here's some I-IV-Vs for you to play with.

I haven't seen the lessons here but there's bound to be some for you. Experiment with the 3 chord sets I posted. You start with "I" and end with "I" like A to A. This here is a popular 12 bar blues progression and we'll play it in A major that you learned:
A.......A........A........A
\ \ \ \..\ \ \ \..\ \ \ \..\ \ \ \
D.......D........A........A
\ \ \ \..\ \ \ \..\ \ \ \..\ \ \ \
E.......D........A........E
\ \ \ \..\ \ \ \..\ \ \ \..\ \ \ \
Each "\" is a strum however you want to strum it and there are 4 strums per bar. This is common timing which there are 4 beats per bar and quarter note per beat. You can play this progression with any of the 3 chord set I posted. Play it fast or play it slow.
Have fun.

Thanks for all the encourage people. I'm getting reasonably good at moving between the ADE chords but keep finding that I inadvertantly trap strings I should'nt but it's coming along! When I first picked the thing up I though I would never even get a sound out of it properly.
What you posted is what i'm practising at the moment :o) I must take the time to browse through the site for the lessons.
Cheers all

Welcome RockingDad!
This is one of the BEST sites on the net, bar none. The amount of time spent getting their knowledge out so anyone can enjoy and feel great about their efforts is outstanding! I would recommend Kirks book, I'm buying one asap for me.
Again welcome and your gonna love it!

You must realize that playing guitar is a lifetime commitment so take your time and practice slowly at first. You don't want to pick up bad habits.
Most important of all, have fun!

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule
Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
