Doveman ... old picker ... 1st time poster

I just joined this morning ...

Been playing since '67 ... started playing at age 11.

Played in bands from late '70s to early '80s ... Allman Brothers, Marshall Tucker, ZZ Top, Skynrd, Clapton, etc. More recently guys like Derek Trucks.

I stopped playing bands in the '80s but kept my rig. My main rig is an original '78 Mesa/Boogie and '80 Yamaha SA2000 semi-hollowbody. But I've recently picked up a G&L Legacy, Washburn Idol, and Schecter PT Vintage Tele. I also have a couple of acoustics ... Takamine 6 string and '74 Giannini gut string.

I discovered PC digital recording about 4 years ago and have recorded about 100 covers and several originals. About half of them are at SOUNDCLICK (artist Ken Dove) if your interested. These last few years. I've gotten some of my chops back doing these recordings. I've tried to attempt many styles. I'm not a singer but I do my best ... so I can play the guitar parts.

I love slide ... that's why I'm here. There are many slide tunes on the site ... some original ... some covers like Layla. All my slide parts are in standard tuning.

I'll start looking around the site ... always looking for new slide information!

Hey, doveman ... thanks for joining over here. Sounds like we have a similar history. I also started when I was 11, love all the same bands you do (you didn't mention Little Feat, though) and play slide in standard and dropped D, as you discovered over at Seymour Duncan.

Stick around, please, you'll find this to be a very friendly hangout.

Actually, Little Feat is right in there. I recorded (attempted anyway) Dixie Chicken. But I like a lot of music ... I'll try anything from Led Zep to Reggae to Big Band (Glenn Miller) to BB King to Country to A-Brothers, etc.

I always like learning new things. I'm intrigued by your material ... so I'll looking around here ... maybe asking some questions ... maybe making some purchases. Looks like a great site.

I might mention it occasionally at some different forums. A good thing needs to be spread around.

Welcome Doveman - nice to have another experienced guitarist around to pick up tips from! Glad you came aboard - I'll have to check out your Soundclick page, always enjoy discovering new artists.

As this is an old post, response to it is probably unnecessary, however, in reading your profile, I had to smile as it sounds pretty close to my history...believe I started in 1966, I'm a couple years older than you though, (54),played in a band for about the same span of time and the same years, (70's to mid 80's), played much the same mix. Always loved the sound of the slide, but, busy with what I played then, keeping current, never put much effort into it until hearing Kirk on Youtube. No longer in a band, I'm doing what I want musically now, when I heard him play, I thought...I've got to put the effort in to approach to some degree what he does. For some reason, his tone, phrasing, expression of established songs resonates with me. In my humble opinion, he blows a lot of well recognized sliders out of the pond, with nothing taken away from them. Anyway...great opportunity to enjoy learning something I loved but never gave time to.

Ha..... welcome
I started playing around 1962. Never pro, however I played in a lot of local "jam" bands. Partys and camping trips, birthdays.... I grew up on Beatles ;Stones; Eagles;Lynyrd Skynyrd; Allman Brothers, Bad Company; Led Zeppellin; Gary Moore.....got into Blues Muddy Waters; BB king; Albert King; Clapton. I loved the sound of slide but never really tried to learn it.
A few years ago I had a stroke due to high blood pressure that went unchecked. That made my fretting hand too weak to play the Classics I learned and played for years. I tried and tried to get back to playing regular guitar with no success.
I then told myself the only way I can ever play again is if I learn slide. So on a new journey I embarked.............of course I heard Kirks sliding on-line and said.."Thats it, I want to play like that!" And I have been learning slide ever since. About 4 years now.
I love it !
Kirk is a great slider and teacher. Thats why we are all here.
The iceing on the cake is the great people on this site.....trust me, stick around a while you will love it too!

Thank you Slick for the welcome...sounds like a few mature classic rock-blues guys came here to expand their horizons...I appreciate the opportunity to cut the learning curve down a bit and hope to enjoy shooting the breeze here and there...I haven't made a great effort in reading what others have offered here, but, the few I have scanned over seems to verify I'm in good company and will stick around!

Thanks for the welcome!
