Smile Hey all, new here

Hey, I'm Mike. Haha.

Well, I live in a really small town with not much to do, and seeing as Senior year is starting to slacken up a little, I've decided to pick up my electric guitar and give it a shot again. I haven't touched it since I was 12 and it's too prettyful to not put to some good use.

So right, I have forgotten everything, literally everything that relates to guitars. Haha, so far right now I can tune it (With the help of a tuner) and latch the straps. That's about it. And sifting through the lessons and everything, I haven't really found one for a novice that's just beginning. Maybe I just overlooked it or maybe it doesn't exist, but if you could point me in the right way...

Mike

Hey, thanks for the welcomes.

Alright, I've told you guys I'm an idiot trying to teach myself guitar, right? Good.

So yeah, really stupid and basic question, how does one play two notes at the same time? Like on a tab the notes that are on top of each other?

If your using your fingers, just pick 1 string per finger. Depending on the tune, it could be that both notes are brushed at the same time with thumb or finger or picked with a combination of thumb and fingers. Depends on which strings need to be played. Try all ways and see what sounds best to you and what fits the tune.

But I'm using a pick, haha.

So yeah... What would be the basic way of playing two strings at the same time with a pick?

When the notes are on adjacent strings just strum them so it sounds like one note. When the 2 notes are on other strings you have to do Hybred picking. Use the pick on the lower string while using your middle or 3rd finger to pick the other string or strings. You could google hybred picking for more info.

Hi Lutefisk.

The lessons I post here are all fingerstyle, so trying to attack them using a flatpick is not going to be easy. I suggest you put the flatpick away and get those fingers happening. You can see in the movies the basic moves and technique. Since you're starting out again after years of inactivity, you may as well learn something brand new.

Eh, sorry to revive this topic but does fingerpicking work with an electric guitar? I'm having some trouble with it.

Hello everyone, first my name is Howard and I live in Florida, the great sunshine state with many hurricanes..ha..ha.. Anyway I received a FirstAct ME506 electric guitar for Christmas from my four beautiful children, I am sure to some this is not the best, but I love it, first because my children gave it to me, and second because I have wanted to play an electric for years, just never had the time or money to even think about investing in one, and yes, my playing is very limited, I am a newbie in the greatest sence of the word, I have never played an electric guitar in my life, but I have been playing an acoustic on and off (mostly off) for about ten years or so, I have a very hectic work life, and family life so not much for a bit of down time if you know what I mean?
I have never learned to read tabs, notes or any sheet music at all; I have always played by ear, and always for relaxation and fun. I am now approaching 40’ish WOW !! where did all the time go?Anyway I have the time and patience to learn this and I want it so bad, I am very eager to be able to grasp all I can, it has always been a dream of mine to hear a song by such artist as Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, Ozzy and many more, buy the sheet music and learn and understand what I have just bought.
I have been reading some post for a few weeks now and I really think I have found the right place with excellent advice from many talented guitarists, I feel at home here by what I have read, and everyone is very nice and pleasant in their responses. Any help on reading notes and so forth would be greatly appreciated.
A friend of mine gave me the sheet music to “In Old L.A. Tonight” by Ozzy and I love the intro. To this song so much, but I have no idea what I am even looking at.
Anyway nice meeting all and I look forward to getting to know everyone here and learning all I can, in advance thanks to all!!

Start with tabs, they will get you up and playing quicker though it is worth learning standard at some point too. Google for that Ozzzy tune on tab sites. You will probably be able to find it somewhere.
Take a look at these lessons, they cover the basics of guitar playing including reading tabs.
Brand new to playing the guitar?...read this first.
Good luck and welcome.
