TenThumbs checkin' in!
Hi all. TenThumbs (Mike actually) from Ontario Canada checking in. It's -7c outside right now - good weather for indoor guitar playing.
I'm a 59 year old retired firefighter (31.5 years on the job) and a lifetime cyclist. I started messing around with guitars while still in school but never really learned to play anything.
Fast forward to about 15 years ago when I bought a Strat and decided to try again. I went through 3 teachers until I decided I was guitar dyslexic. Nothing made sense and they pushed too hard.
About two weeks ago I decided that it's now or never so I dragged the (mint) guitar from under the bed and started again. I bought the Jamorama guitar course and I'm at the start of book 2 Advanced (that's a laugh!). Anyway, I'm working on it.
Then today I typed "beginner guitar forum" into Google and found this place! I've been here about 15 minutes and it looks great. Thanks Kirk and Clancy; I'm itchin' to look through your site. I'll flip you some $ if I stick around. So far so good though. I wanna be able to do that "Over the Rainbow" tune.
See ya!
Mike T.

Welcome Mike. I'm from Ontario as well.
I'm sure we all felt at one time or another we had 10 thumbs when we started out. This will pass. Over the Rainbow is a great tune...the easy version (for me). There are some other easy versions out there too. When these were posted, it made me feel a lot better!
Practice, practice, practice. It does pay off.
Cheerios!

Small world. My nic is allthumbs and I am dyslexic. Are we related???? This place should help and if your so inclined, Kirk's Plain Talk materials enabled me to play a bit in spite of my dyslexia.

Hey Mike welcome to the site. It's a great place to settle into and "Over the Rainbow" was the hook for me too! It took a little while but it's worth it when it comes out for the first time.

Welcome tenthumbs,
And despite his claim he can "play a bit" allthumbs is a master and an all around nice guy to boot. There are quite a few Canucks on this site, but then again there are lots of Aussies, Brits, Yanks, and just about every other nationality. Welcome aboard!
Those outside Canada probably can't appreciate how funny your avatar is. That's not 10 thumbs, it's a TV character called Bubbles from a TV show called Trailer Park Boys. He's a riot!

Hey I could be the real Bubbles! Don't forget Bubbles is a great fan of Rush and Alex their guitarist. Maybe I'm trying to play so I can jam on stage with them and not just feed Loonies into the dryers (insider joke for Rush concert-goers there!)

Hi Mike,
I'm in Eastern Ontario - outside of Ottawa. I was originally from Windsor, so I 've travelled past Woodstock many a times.

Nice axes! I hope you don't chop with those axes like Pete Townshend did. I was squirtin' the wet stuff on the red stuff for a lifetime and retired last April as a Cappy (which means I told others to do the squirtin).
Nutty, I had a mini 4 day holiday in Ottawa (National art gallery) last spring. We took the easy way out and flew from Hamilton - a whopping forty minute flight! Think of all that traffic we missed!

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule
Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
