In Topic: As a Beginner.......

I think guitar gods sometimes forget how hard it is for a beginner to strum a chord. Its important to learn chords but its also important to make music that's pleasant to listen to. I started learning the guitar by learning the minor pentatonic scale. When I first played the notes of the scale out of sequence, it was so amazing to realise that I had made music. I wrote 3 articles about my experience learning to play the guitar - go to guitarnoise.com and search for abbott

I live in Wellington and buy all my guitar strings on ebay. There's lots more selection than in any New Zealand music store. I use D'Addario FlatTops - EFT16. Hardly any screeching when you slide on the low strings. Most excellent.

I've looked for easier versions. I think the one on this site is the easiest. It was one of the first songs that I learned when I started with the guitar. If you play the first bar, it will inspire you to learn the rest of the song. Most hard things become easy with enough practice.

In Topic: Some good fingerpick/fingerstyle songs?

Over at truefire.com, David Hamburger has a most excellent lesson on fingerstyle playing called, Fingerstyle Blues Handbook. None of the lessons are that hard but they sound real good. David also has a more advance lesson package called New School Fingerstyle Blues that has some amazing songs to learn. Also at truefire.com is Fingerstyle Blues 1 by acousticguitarworkshop.com. I have all these lessons - highly recommended.
