That's a good idea. The first slide I bought was a tapered glass slide and I wanted to wear it on my pinky like Kirk teaches, but it flopped all over the place. I ended up buying one of Kirk's slides which is thicker on one end. It makes it a nice fit, but effectively does what you're talking about. I'll have to try that with my glass slide.
Thanks.

I've played guitar for many years but only had an electric guitar for many of those years. A few years ago, I went out and bought an acoustic and my fingers were killing me so I put some exta lights on the guitar until I toughened up. Currently I use just light guage (and considering going to medium). The lighter the guage, the more tone you lose but as a beginner, tone is the least of your worries. I like the Martin phosphor bronze strings and I buy them on line at this website (of which I'm not affiliated in any way):

I change my strings about every 2 months because it just sounds excellent when you have new strings on that baby!
Good luck!

In Topic: How to practice??

Well, I don't know about a system, but I think if you're working on something that is challenging you and you're enjoying it, then that's the system for you. I started out by just learning chords and singing songs. Then I learned some easy leads (when someone showed me, or I got some tablature).....Fast forward 30 years (with almost a 20 year break)....in May of '06 I got Kirk's book planetalk and now I can figure out songs and leads on my own. There's always a new level to goto once you've got a handle on the level you're at. Good luck.

With my guitar in hand, I am analyzing how I play stairway to heaven. My fingering is the same as you mention above (i.e at the 5th fret). My thumb is right in the middle of the neck behind the index finger. My index finger bars strings 1-4 with the tip of my finger right next to the 5th fret and the rest of the index finger on a slight angle toward the 4th fret. I have pretty long fingers so the middle finger and ring finger come in pretty perpendicular to the fretboard without catching the other strings. By having the thumb in the middle of the neck, it brings the fingers out in front quite a bit to allow the perpendicular fingering.
