Depending on my mood I find myself either strumming or fingerpicking some of the songs I play. Or combine during one song to give it an easy quiet start and some spice in the chorus.
And by playing around with strum patterns and/or fingerpicking patterns you give the song you play your own personal character. Believe me my "Smells like teen spirit" whilst fingerpicking has a completely different effect than the original :-) But still I enjoy it :-) and that's what counts in the end.

Bad part is that I'm now in between moving to a new house and temporarily live with my parents-in-law. Nice, but somehow building up my homestudio there does not sound so feasible.

Instead of GAS I do suffer after reading a lot on this forum from FART (For Always Recording Tunes) and want to set it up and record new stuff this weekend.

I guess that why they call it accompanying guitar :-) BTW, for sure there are also a lot of musical pieces where the piano/keyboard plays something completely different than the melody line of the singer. Just imagine Clocks by Coldplay and wonder how the piano and the lead singer part follow a completely different pattern!
