Wrote this song a few years ago, I pulled it out and did a rewrite on it, hope it's ok, rough demo, sat down and played it, screwed up numerous times but just kept record going and this is the best take so far



Echoes in time

There is a music store stuck in a wasteland
Guitars in the window could do with a dusting down
Run by an old man who used to be somebody
Back in the days of the beatles and carnaby street
His shop used to be a place for the rising stars
Making him famous playing on his guitars
The scene was so vibrant music was everywhere
Pretty young girls with flowers in their hair

Now the girls are all women the flowers have died
The stars who had risen no longer come by
He opens the store and then turns round the sign
But the good days have gone they're echoes in time

He walks to the window paints the words closing down
Looks out on the street but there's no one around

The street used to be such a colourful sight
Street markets and parties so full of life
As young girls showed off their mary quant looks
Young men sat in cafes reading kerouac books
Planning a road trip in search another way
Walking in his store to find a guitar to play
Saying one day they'll be up on the stage
A world full of promise a golden age

The boys on the road trip got lost on the way
The Cafe's now empty no young girls parade
The street sits in silent slow urban decline
The people moved on they're echoes in time

The old man closes his store for the last time
Sits in the backroom and strums his guitar then he's gone

Looks for the light that will lead to the brighter side
Opens his eyes to a world that's gone back in time
Pretty young girls with flowers in their hair
The street's full of life music is everywhere
Girls on parade out enjoying a sunny day
The sound of a folk song comes from a small cafe
Music store window gleaming with new guitars
The place to be seen with the rising stars

The old man looks round then sheds a tear
He's seen the future it's much better here
Once again he's a young man a man in his prime
The scenes are now real not just echoes in time

Excellent song (and job) Chris! And a waltz too! This is new for you - I always think you can't beat a waltz for 'carrying' a song - I could be biased.

The lyrics are outstanding - I remember wandering down Carnaby St in the days of Mary Quant, and Penny Lane nearby - swinging London alright. Nice memories, thanks for that - sad that it's gone (I'm guessing) but at least it happened once.

Definitely a good tune, m'friend, dug this a bunch.
And I do love me a waltz...my favorite dance, in fact. This one has a tempo and length that would sorely test my speed
and endurance though, lol.

Hi Astrat., hope life's treating you well. thanks for giving this a listen, I do like the Waltz, glad you liked this song, I had to do several takes to get a half decent recording of this which did test my stamina a bit

I read the lyrics and they were very powerful. What all songwriters try to achieve is to have every word tell a story, and you most definitely did it on this tune.

I took a memory lane tour of my hometown some 22 years ago this July and it was sad, yet refreshing to see some new changes after some 17 years of absence. Hmm, maybe I should pick up my pencil and guitar.

Thanks for having a listen and for those comments Gene, I haven't visited any of the places I used to live for a long time now, should really, I think part of me wants to remember them as they were. Pick up your pencil and guitar and write something Gene, songs work well when you write from personal experience, I work from memory or just use my imagination which does sometimes create some strange songs but it's always fun. Hope you're well Gene.
