I've got a Pocket Pod and yes you can use it for recording on a computer.
The Pocket Pod has a Direct Out/Headphones socket that can be connected straight to the Microphone socket of your computer/soundcard and you can use this as an input to any recording software you have. It can also be plugged straight into a 4-track recorder, etc.
The Pocket Pod also acts as a MIDI in / MIDI out device when connected via USB and I believe you can then use this as an input for recording. I haven't tried this method and the quick start guide only shows the first method of connecting but it should be possible.
If you shop around you can get them cheaper than £79 (Amazon has them for £73) and for normal playing you will need two instrument cables (guitar to pod, pod to amp) and a 9v DC mains adaptor (I got mine off Amazon for £8). To connect to a computer soundcard/mic socket you will also need a 3.5mm stereo plug to plug cable (£8 for a 3m cable in Maplin).
They're great little bits of kit and I really love mine. It's light and portable and you can get a whole range of sounds from bluesy twang to heavy distortion. With delay/tremolo/chorus/flange effects you can get just about everything in between too. You can clip it onto your belt/guitar strap, plug a set of headphones in and rock out without disturbing the sleeping kids!!! The mains adaptor is essential as 4 AAA batteries will only last so long. It also has a 3.5mm stereo input so you can use the same stereo cable that you'd use to connect to your computer to connect in your MP3 player instead and jam along to your favourite songs.
All that for the price of a decent stompbox...
Ali
P.S. You get the Pocket Pod, 4 [cheapo] AAA batteries and a USB cable in the box. You can get a Pocket Pod Pack that includes an extra instrument cable, headphones, mains adaptor but I didn't think it was worth the extra money and picked up the bits I needed elsewhere for less.

Im relly thinking of getting one now as i need something to start recording myself so that i can improve my playing.
As for software is there any recommendations.
I also like the amount of stuff it can do for like you say the price of a decent pedal.

I was looking for something relatively inexpensive (no more than £150) that could give me distortion for rock and metal, anything beyond that was all bonus for me.
The amps could do what I wanted but I didn't REALLY want a new amp and they didn't seem to be as versatile or as the other stuff.
The GX/UX1/GuitarPort were no good for me because they are for connecting to a computer only (I think) so I couldn't use them to play through my amp or use it when somebody else was using the computer (namely the missus). Plus I wasn't overly fussed about recording my playing.
The POD 2.0 was a bit cumbersome for me and the xt/X3 were a bit OTT and expensive for now.
The Pocket POD suited me because I can play through my existing amp (even though it lessens the sound quality being small and uber-cheap) or pick it up and take it downstairs and use my headphones. Also as I used to work away from home quite a bit (and still might again) so I could bag it up with my guitar and take it with me to practice quietly in a hotel room - no amp needed.
It comes down to what you really, REALLY want to do and to some extent what you've got in terms of amp, FX, software, computer audio system (namely soundcard and speakers), etc.
-If you want a USB guitar interface plus bundled recording & multi-FX software then the GX or similar is the way to go. You should be able to use this to play using your computer as the FX rig and amp.
-If you want standalone multi-FX that you can play through your amp or pick up and take with you and play anywhere with or without an amp then the Pocket POD will do that. It can be used as a simple input for recording as I have mentioned but this will be a pre-processed signal to the software so less post-production needed but you don't have the 'raw' guitar signal to go back to and work with.
-If you want standalone multi-FX into your amp plus the USB interface for your computer then the POD 2.0/xt/X3 is the kind of thing you need but these aren't as portable and are more expensive (about £100/£170/£250 respectively) plus you may still need some recording software for the POD 2.0/xt.

The missus said i can have £160 gbp to spend next month.Ok its not loads but to me.
So now what to get.
Im thinking of getting the pockets bigger brother which will be the pod 2.0 and a digitech deathmetal pedal because i want a lot of distortion while i chould use the pod for tremolo. To get a crunchy metal sound but all i wanna do is play.
It kinda feels like christmas is coming to me early lol.
Ill keep you all filled in when i get my new toys

Its eaither the line 6 floor pod plus @ £149
or line 6 pod 2.0 @ £98
I basically want something to play around withsound effects without have to spend a fortune on seperate pedals and i want to link up to the computer and start recording.
Or i might save some cash and just buy the pocket pod.

You could send the headphone out of the Pocket Pod to you Mic in on your PC, but that won't sound great.
The USB on the Pocket Pod is only for Vyzex software and not for tranferring sound.
The pocket Pod is not really a recording device. If you want a Line 6 device for recording, better off to go for the 2.0 or bigger, that'll be designed for that.
I think that the point of the Pocket Pod was "silent practice" with your mp3 player plugged in. Like, "groove along with your favourite artist."

If you want something that records, has good effects and is cheap, something like a second hand Digitech RP would be good. There's heaps of different models, varying in price. Nothing wrong with 2nd hand effects.
