Good morning - need some advice from you experts! I'm a 64 yr. old beginner guy who wants to play acoustic electric bass. The reason I want acoustic is so I can go to the park or other homes and jam with others and don't need an amp. The bass should sound like a bass and be low action as my ole fingers ain't what they used to be, dangit! What's the best guitar I can get for my money under $500? I'm so burned out by looking on ebay and the internet and I'm overwhelmed by the kazillions out there. I played tenor sax and have a good ear but guitar is new to me, however I'm excited about playing this. Thanks for any help. Don

Welcome, Ken, sorry, but I know less than you do about available bass guitars. Good luck.

Welcome Ken,

I had the same intention at one time of buying an acoustic bass for the same reasons you mentioned. However, when I went to the music stored I was informed that you do in fact need an amp. Yes, you can get a bit of sound out of it, but the acoustic bass is designed more for the style of music. He told me it was used a lot for jazz music.

So, I'd say go check one out and see what you think. I ended up buying an electric bass in the end.

Good luck.

Annette

Hi Nutty, since you bought an electric bass maybe you could tell me a good one for a beginner. I'm going to look at electrics instead of acoustics because a friend told me they're easier to play than an acoustic. I see some package deals on the internet that come with an amp and other stuff but so far I'm not sure about brands. They all seem to be in the same price range. Is there anything to beware of?

Hi Don (sorry for calling you Ken LOL)

I have a Washburn Force Series, like these ones.

Force Series | Basses

I'm pretty happy with it. I think it was just under $500 Canadian.

My daughter plays bass as well (before I did) and when I came home with it she said "sure buy yourself a good one"! That's what happens when you're the money maker. It'll be hers someday anyway and she knows that!

Happy shopping!

Good morning everyone, thanks for all the welcomes. Any of you heard or had any experience with the Michael Kelly Visionary with the highly acclaimed variable set neck? Apparently you can set the action from low to high, the video is impressive. :smilinguitar:

Did he mean a double-bass? I have never seen an acoustic bass at a jazz gig, but they are somewhat different to the acoustic bass.

They're pretty impressive guitars, haven't seen that before, Michael Kelly is well respected, kind of thinking his guitars are way beyond my budget though:winkthumb:
