Where to get a mic

I want to get a cheap mic that still works decently. Do you know where I can get one?

I fully appreciate budget is a consideration, but there is a good reason why some mics are $30 and some are $5000, and everything in between.
The JTS mics are not bad for an entry-level mic, could be worth a look.

How much are you looking to spend and what kind of sources do you plan recording with it (vocals, acoustic or electric guitar, etc)?

I have been extremely impressed with the level of service from www.sweetwater.com All the people who work there are extensively trained and most are either sound engineers, musicians, or both. Call and discuss with them what you are looking to record, your setup, price range, etc. and they'll steer you to the right options.

This is a great deal and they sound good...

You need to add cords, which are about $7 each. Even the reviews that say they are crap, admit they sound decent but break easily. Mine get dropped on the carpet and once and a while but still work great. So they don't seem to break unless misused.

Actually there is ONLY ONE REASON. The components are more expensive! That's it. Sometimes more expensive is "better". Many times it's not. There is a reason why the SM57 has been used on snare tops and guitar cabs on a million classic records.

Here's an article I wrote a few months ago. Microphones Don't Make THAT Much Difference. (If it's not cool me posting links to my own site just let me know).

I own a $2500 microphone (Soundelux U99). I use 57s and MXL mics all the time.

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule

Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!

Buy it now for only $10
