Mixing opinions

Well, I have a studio at home. I record using a Tascam FW-1082 firewire digital mixer/console.

I have uploaded two songs performed by a group of 14-15 years old kids who have this band I recorded recently. I would like your opinions about the mixing, what you would add, or take away.

I use Nuendo and a zillion plugins.

Thanks a lot for your time.

P.S.: Excuse the kids' English, they are Mexicans, so Spanish is their mother tongue (mine too).

Rockin in the free world was just about perfect to my ear. The first one, the vocal was just a touch to much in front for my taste. Tell the boys they rock and good luck with their music. I enjoyed it.

Both sounded very good to me- I suppose you could back the vox up just a touch on Suenos. These guys are really good for early high-schoolers. I was far more impressed with Suenos than Rockin' In The Free World (never been much for ol' Neil)- at that age, the thought of playing something with a more mellow tempo was foreign At that time, it was full speed ahead!

Thank you very much to both of you for your replies. I will take your opinions into consideration.

As for the kids, yes, they are great. They had their mistakes, obviously. We had to go back and forth on some parts of their songs, but overall it was great. And it was the first time they recorded in a studio. They were afraid/curious about how the whole "recording/playing alone" thing would work, but things ended up well.

I used 7 mics for the drums, and the drummer and bassist recorded at the same time (I couldn't get the drummer to play to the metronome beat in Nuendo) since they both needed each other to play. But I guess they have a bright future if they stick together.

Recording 15 year old kids with Nuendo. That's interesting!
I'm not sure the weakest link is the mixing. There is something not right about the kick drum / bass guitar combination. It sounds "scared". It may be mixing, but I'm not convinced.

Those vocal are pretty hot. I'm not sure if the vocal level matches the mood of the song.

Overall, it's not too bad, though.
