I don't know if this helps, I've just searched the internet: http://www.musicdsp.org/phpWiki/index.php/WhatIsVST
the point is that VST are efects you can use to process your audio recordings...
check out this, too:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_Studio_Technology
I'm not sure what that guy wanted to tell you, but I suppose he was talking about getting software that supports VST plug-ins, because, I think, Audacity doesn't support them fully, because of some legal issues with Steinberg...
Please somebody correct me if I'm not right...

I'll explain as best I can without anny real technical knowledge of why or how they work. VST and VSTi are formats for plug-ins which are like programs with in a program. Like for instance, a guitar amplifier plug-in may be used with kristal recording software to mimic an actual guitar amp on your computer. Audacity is a great rec program but It's not good for VST's. All the effects in Audacity (compressor, fade in/out, etc.) are all plug-ins, but they are not as advanced and interactive as VST's. Kristal is another free rec program that works realy well with VST plug-ins. Often I will record with Audacity and then open the .wav file in kristal and use the VST's to apply effects. Hope this helps some.

Well until I can play whole lot better then I might understand effects a whole lot better , which in turn might enhance my playing ..
Thanks for replying in such terms as a noobu like myself understood

There is also a version of Cubase (by Steinberg) called Cubase VST and the lesser form Cubasis VST.... Could that be what they were referring too? Were you talking about recording programs or effects at the time?

I don't think there is such a thing as being to much of a nOOb to start messing around with effects. I dove right into the effects when I first started recording and while I had no clue what I was doing, I kept tweaking with it until I got something I liked. If you can apply effects to your guitar with a guitar pedal, amp's onboard effects, etc... then there's no reason why you can't start messing around with VST plugins.

If you want to get a solid recording package that will do everything (record audio, MIDI, 48 track mixing, VST audio support, etc,) on the cheap, check out Powertracks. The new version (PT11) just came out and the big upgrade is native support for VST. With some programs, you had to buy a "wrapper" to use VSTs- this is a program that acts as a "translator" from VST to whatever your recording software would use (i.e. DXi).
Anyhoo- Powertracks is less than $100 and it'll stand up against programs that cost $500 or more.
Also, I'm like Tekker- just keep fiddling around until it sounds good to you, then tweak it some more. I've found that I like to pump up the bass too much, so that's a mixing area for me to work on...

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule
Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
